11. Ultra-sensitive measurements of magnetically labelled RCA products in a microfluidic channel using a high-Tc SQUID
Abstract : The development of a nucleic acid (deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA)) bioassay based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with a high-Tc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) gradiometer as a magnetic readout is described. The specific binding of the MNPs to the target DNA molecules changes the MNPs size distribution and, therefore, the relaxation dynamics and is measured by magnetic ac susceptometry. READ MORE

12. Coil Design and Related Studies for the Fusion-Fission Reactor Concept SFLM Hybrid
Abstract : A fusion-fission (hybrid) reactor is a combination of a fusion device and a subcritical fission reactor, where the fusion device acts as a neutron source and the power is mainly produced in the fission core. Hybrid reactors may be suitable for transmutation of transuranic isotopes in the spent nuclear fuel, due to the safety margin on criticality imposed by the subcritical fission core. READ MORE

13. Modeling of losses in power transformers from dc to the low kilohertz range
Abstract : The development of HVDC converters, local generation and tractions systems increases the demand for power converters. While a lot of studies have been conducted on the power electronics, there are still open questions concerning the contained power transformer that operates at a few kilohertz. READ MORE

14. Electromagnetic Modeling and Design of Medical Implants and Devices
Abstract : This thesis covers two topics in biomedical electromagnetics: pacemaker lead heating in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optimization of sensorpositions in magnetic tracking. The electromagnetic part of pacemaker lead heating during MRI is a resonant phenomenon which is complicated by, among other factors, the wide range of length scales involved in the problem. 15. Chip-based magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles
Abstract : Magnetically levitated superconductors are extremely isolated from the environment, their mechanical properties can be tuned magnetically, and can be coupled to quantum systems such as superconducting quantum circuits. As such, they are a promising experimental platform for the creation of massive spatial quantum states that would test quantum mechanics in a hitherto unexplored parameter regime. READ MORE
