  1. 1. Single-cycle undulator light

    Author : Georgii Shamuilov; Vitaliy Goryashko; Gianluca Geloni; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; terahertz technology; light sources; electron beams; space charge; waveform control; optical magnetic lens; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The past decade has witnessed a sharp rise of interest in coherent terahertz (THz) light sources for applications in condensed-matter physics. These sources are a powerful tool for studying collective excitations in solid-state systems: THz light can directly couple to low-energy excitations on the meV-scale such as the collective excitations of spins and phonons. 2. 2. Modeling and Verification of Ultra-Fast Electro-Mechanical Actuators for HVDC Breakers

    Author : Ara Bissal; Göran Engdahl; Elena Lomonova; KTH; []
    Keywords : Actuators; Armature; Capacitors; Circuit breakers; Coils; Damping; Eddy currents; Elasticity; Electro-mechanical devices; Electromagnetic forces; Finite element methods; HVDC transmission; Image motion analysis; Magnetic domains; Magnetic flux; Magnetic forces; Magnetic materials; Magnets; Thermal analysis; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : The continuously increasing demand for clean renewable energy has rekindled interest in multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids. Although such grids have several advantages and a great potential, their materialization has been thwarted due to the absence of HVDC breakers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Excited States of Carotenoids and Their Functions in Light Harvesting

    Author : Donatas Zigmantas; Kemisk fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; spektroskopi; magnetic and optical properties; Carotenoids; light-harvesting; excited states; excitation energy transfer; femtosecond spectroscopy; supraconductors; magnetic resonance; electrical; Condensed matter:electronic structure; time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy; magnetisk resonans; supraledare; magnetiska och optiska ; egenskaper elektriska; Kondenserade materiens egenskaper:elektronstruktur; relaxation; spectroscopy;

    Abstract : The research presented in this thesis is focused on characterization of photophysical properties of lowest singlet excited states of carotenoids and their functions in the process of photosynthetic light harvesting. It is shown that the various light-harvesting complexes utilize different strategies to achieve efficient energy transfer from carotenoids to (bacterio)chlorophylls. READ MORE

  4. 4. 3D Magnetic Photonic Crystals : Synthesis and Characterization

    Author : Mei Fang; K.Venkat Rao; Lyubov Belova; Rajeev Ahuja; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; magnetic photonic crystals; photonic band gaps; Fe3O4 nanoparticles; silica; Optical physics; Optisk fysik; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis presents the synthesis methods and the characterizations of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, silica spheres with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded, and three dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) prepared from the spheres. The structure, material composition, magnetic and optical properties, photonic band gaps (PBGs), as well as how these properties depend on the concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles, are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Faraday rotation (FR) and optical spectrophotometers. 5. 5. Biomolecular Recognition Based on Field Induced Magnetic Bead Dynamics

    Author : Rebecca Stjernberg Bejhed; Peter Svedlindh; Klas Gunnarsson; Maria Strömme; Teresa Zardán Gómez de la Torre; Christer Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic biosensor; magnetic nanoparticle; DNA detection; Teknisk fysik; Engineering Science;

    Abstract : In this thesis, three different read-out techniques for biomolecular recognition have been studied. All three techniques rely on the change in dynamic behaviour of probe functionalised magnetic beads after binding to a biomolecular target complementary to the probe. READ MORE
