  1. 1. Aspects of locomotor evolution in the Carnivora (Mammalia)

    Author : Ki Andersson; Lars E. Holmer; Lars Werdelin; Margaret E. Lewis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Morphology; Mammalia; Carnivora; Locomotion; Cranial; Elbow joint; Morphology; Morphometrics; Landmarks; Multivariate statistics; Allometry; Ecomorphology; Dental; Body size; Morfologi; Morphology; cell biology; pathology; Morfologi; cellbiologi; patologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the shape of the distal humerus trochlea is analysed using landmark-based morphometrics and multivariate methods, with the aim of exploring locomotor evolution in carnivorans. Elbow joint morphology is used together with body size and craniodental morphology to characterize past and present carnivorans. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mammalian Molecular Systematics with Emphasis on the Insectivore Order Lipotyphla

    Author : Suzette Kay Mouchaty; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; rate heterogeneity; Thryonomys; Hystricognathi; Rodentia; Afrotheria; Echinops; Tenrecidae; Erinaceus; Erinaceidae; Chiroptera; Sorex; Soricidae; Talpa; Talpidae; Lipotyphla; Mammalia; mitochondrial DNA; molecular systematics; phylogeny; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Insectivore classification has been one of the most controversial problems in mammalian systematics. Evolutionary relationships among the six extant families, Talpidae (moles), Soricidae (shrews), Erinaceidae (hedgehogs), Tenrecidae (tenrecs), Chryosochloridae (golden moles), and Solenodontidae (solenodons), have remained uncertain based on morphological data. 3. 3. Molecular Phylogenetics of Mammals

    Author : Morgan Kullberg; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; EST; divergence times; phylogenomics; phylogenetic reconstruction; Mammals; Eutheria; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the phylogenetic relationships of the Mammalia have been studied at various levels. Different sources of genetic information have been evaluated and used as phylogenetic markers. These include the well-known mitochondrial genome, cDNA from housekeeping genes and expressed sequence tags from nuclear genes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects of carnivoran evolution in Africa

    Author : Reihaneh Dehghani; Lars Werdelin; Philippe Gaubert; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carnivora; Evolution; Africa; Viverridae; Herpestidae; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Systematic Zoology; systematisk zoologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the evolution of African small carnivorans, with emphasis on East African Viverridae and Herpestidae (Carnivora, Mammalia). Viverridae and Herpestidae are two Old World feliform (belonging to the cat branch) carnivoran families with a confusing, and sometimes even misleading, taxonomic and systematic history, in addition to a scarce fossil record.
