  1. 1. Prediction of Spontaneous Preterm Birth : Clinical and Immunological Aspects

    Author : Maria Svenvik; Jan Ernerudh; Marie Blomberg; Maria Jenmalm; Teresa Cobo; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Background: Preterm birth (PTB), defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation, accounts for most neonatal death and morbidity. Accurate prediction is a pre-requisite for the prevention and proper management of PTB. However, methods for prediction are unsatisfactory, although sonographic cervical length has a moderate predictive value. READ MORE

  2. 2. Development of IgG subclass antibodies to allergens in early childhood

    Author : Maria C. Jenmalm; Örjan Strannegård; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Background: Immune responses to allergens in young children include both Thl and Th2 like immunity, which may regulate the secretion of IgG subclass antibodies differently. The time, route and level of exposure to an allergen, as well as maternally transferred immunity, may be decisive whether sensitisation or tolerance will ensue. READ MORE

  3. 3. Immunological interactions between mother and child during pregnancy in relation to the development of allergic diseases in the offspring

    Author : Martina Abelius; Maria Jenmalm; Lennart Nilsson; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Pregnancy and allergic disease have both been postulated as T-helper 2 (Th2) phenomena. Thus, the increased propensity of allergic mothers to mount Th2-responses might generate favourable effects on the maintenance of pregnancy, but might also be unfavorable, as fetal exposure to a strong Th2 environment could influence the immune development in the offspring to a Th2-like phenotype, favouring IgE production and possibly allergy development later in life. 4. 4. Can Lactobacillus Reuteri Prevent Allergic Disease in Early Childhood?

    Author : Thomas Abrahamsson; Maria Jenmalm; Bengt Björkstén; John Bienenstock; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Background: An altered microbial exposure may be partly responsible for the increase of allergic diseases in populations with a western lifestyle. Activation of the immune system by microbes early in life is probably required for an accurate maturation of the immune system. READ MORE

  5. 5. Seminal Influence on the Oviduct : Mating and/or semen components induce gene expression changes in the pre-ovulatory functional sperm reservoir in poultry and pigs

    Abstract : Internal fertilization occurs in birds and eutherian mammals. Foetal development, however, is either extra- respectively intra-corpore (egg vs uterus). READ MORE
