  1. 1. Marine Seaweed Invasions : the Ecology of Introduced Fucus evanescens

    Author : Sofia A. Wikström; Lena Kautsky; Ove Eriksson; Paul Lavery; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biological invasions; marine; seaweed; algae; herbivory; enemy release hypothesis; phlorotannins; anti-fouling; Fucus evanescens; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Biological invasions are an important issue of global change and an increased understanding of invasion processes is of crucial importance for both conservation managers and international trade. In this thesis, I have studied the invasion of the brown seaweed Fucus evanescens, to investigate the fate and effect of a perennial, habitat-forming seaweed introduced to a coastal ecosystem. 2. 2. Trophic ecology of meiofauna : Response to sedimentation of phytoplankton blooms in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Francisco J.A. Nascimento; Ragnar Elmgren; Richard Warwick; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Meiofauna; Cyanobacteria; competition; facilitation; ecosystems processes; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Marine soft sediments are the second largest habitat on Earth. How animal communities in this habitat are structured is a central issue in marine ecology. Food is an important limiting factor for many benthic populations, and settling organic matter from phytoplankton blooms is of vital importance to them. READ MORE

  3. 3. Evolutionary ecology of arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) : Intra- and interspecific interactions in circumpolar populations

    Author : Johan Hammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Arctic char; Salvelinus alpinus; biogeography; niche; life history; population ecology; intra- and interspecific interactions; cannibalism; competition; landlocked; marginal populations; species border; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines a suite of ecological and genetic mechanisms influencing the fundamental and realized niche borders of European and North American populations of the Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) species complex in allopatry as well as in sympatry with brown trout (Salmo trutta) or brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). 4. 4. Marine nitrogen fixation : Cyanobacterial nitrogen fixation and the fate of new nitrogen in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Isabell Klawonn; Helle Ploug; Lasse Riemann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biogeochemistry; nitrogen cycling; nitrogen fixation; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Biogeochemical processes in the marine biosphere are important in global element cycling and greatly influence the gas composition of the Earth’s atmosphere. The nitrogen cycle is a key component of marine biogeochemical cycles. READ MORE

  5. 5. Functional diversity of zooplankton in marine food webs : Integrating DNA metabarcoding and network modeling

    Author : Andreas Novotny; Monika Winder; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plankton; Food-Webs; DNA metabarcoding; Marine; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The oceans are important regulators of the Earth’s climate system by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere taken up by primary producers. Zooplankton, including protozoans and metazoans of different phyla and size classes, occupies several trophic niches and regulates energy flow between primary producers and fish. READ MORE
