  3. 8. Improving initial xylose metabolism in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Márk Gárdonyi; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biokemisk teknik; Biochemical technology; xylose isomerase; xylose transport; xylose fermentation; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; metabolic engineering;

    Abstract : The aim of the thesis is to improve the initial steps of xylose metabolism in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae. S. cerevisiae takes up xylose of poor affinity by means of hexose transporters. Metabolic control analysis was used to investigate whether the low xylose utilisation rate is due to inefficient transport. READ MORE

  4. 9. Calcium Responses in the Renal Afferent Arteriole to Angiotensin II and Norepinephrine Stimulation

    Author : Mark Kornfeld; Klinisk neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; norepinephrine; angiotensin II; smooth muscle cells; afferent arteriole; calcium; Kidney; renal hemodynamics; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : Studies were performed to investigate the influence of the vasoconstrictors angiotensin II (AII) and norepinephrine (NE) on calcium metabolism in smooth muscle cells of afferent arterioles. Fura-2 and image analysis techniques were used to evaluate calcium responses in the proximal and distal parts of afferent arterioles with attached glomeruli. READ MORE

  5. 10. Oxidative stress and calcium signalling : implications for diabetes and cardiac glycosides

    Author : Mark Lal; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Calcium; diabetes; Na; K-ATPase; ouabain; oxidative stress;

    Abstract : The signal transduction processes by which an individual cell is able to recognize and respond to its external environment are critical to determining its survival as well as that of the entire organism. In the current study we have investigated the intracellular signalling cascades activated downstream of two separate stimuli: the diabetic milieu and the cardiac glycoside, ouabain. READ MORE
