21. Asthma in school age : prevalence, incidence and remission in relation to environmental determinants
Abstract : Background In the past half-century, the prevalence of asthma among children and adolescents has risen and asthma has become an important public health challenge in Sweden as well as in many other countries, necessitating further studies on this complex disease and its risk factor pattern. The studies included in this thesis aimed to investigate the clinical expression of childhood asthma over time, to describe the determinants of new-onset and remission of asthma, and to evaluate possible environmental risk factors in northern Sweden. 22. Microfluidics at High Pressures : Understanding, Sensing, and Control
Abstract : This thesis explores understanding, sensing, and control in high-pressure microfluidics. The high-pressure regime allows fluids to be forced through narrow channels at substantial speed and creates conditions for fluids of high density and low viscosity—features desired in flow-based chemical analyses. 23. Numerical Renormalization, Doped Antiferromagnets, and Statistics - Topics in Low Dimensional Physics
Abstract : The first part of the thesis deals with so called numerical renormalization group methods, and in particular the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). This method performs extremely well for large one-dimensional quantum systems like spin-chains and Hubbard models. READ MORE

25. Phase Phenomena in Polymer Networks : Empirical Studies on the Influence of Hydrophobicity, Charge Density and Crosslinks on Macroion-Induced Phase Transitions in Polyelectrolyte Gels
Abstract : The thesis concerns polyelectrolyte gels in contact with oppositely charged proteins and surfactant micelles, and includes of four papers (I-IV). In paper I confocal Raman spectroscopy was introduced as a method to trace micelles and investigate the structure of gel-surfactant complexes, in phase separated gel spheres. READ MORE
