11. Density Functional Theory Studies of Small Supported Gold Clusters and Related Questions : What a Difference an Atom Makes
Abstract : During the last decades the specific manipulation of matter on the (sub-) nanometer scale, also known as nanoscience, became possible by technologies such as the scanning tunneling microscope. Nanocatalysts, i.e. catalytic active structures of up to a few nanometers in size, belong to this rather new class of materials. READ MORE

12. On the role of transversus abdominis in trunk motor control
Abstract : All trunk muscles are important contributors to spine stability. However, the deepest abdominal muscle, transversus abdominis (TrA), with its characteristically horizontal fibre orientation seems to serve a unique function in trunk motor control. READ MORE

This thesis investigates neural correlates of consciousness by measuring brain activity while specific contents of consciousness are defined and maintained. READ MORE

14. Space in the Space : Designing Sound Environments for the Shared Indoor Workspace
Abstract : The sound environment in shared indoor workspaces emerges through the interplay of physical layout, materials, technology, and social dynamics. These spaces are designed with specific purposes in mind, taking acoustics into account during construction. READ MORE

15. Insulin-antagonistic neurohormonal pathways in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Abstract : According to the current paradigm, the development of type 2 diabetes is driven by insulin resistance and the gradual failure of beta cells to compensate for this by secreting adequate amounts of insulin. Obesity is an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is considered to influence disease development primarily by induction of insulin resistance, via mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated.
