1. From Branes to Brains : On M-theory and Understanding Thermodynamics
Abstract : This thesis is concerned with research in both physics and physics education, and is divided into two parts.Part IString theory has been the leading candidate over the past few years for a theory that unifies all the fundamental forces of nature. READ MORE

2. Nanocalorimetry of electronic phase transitions in systems with unconventional superconductivity and magnetic ordering
Abstract : In this thesis, low temperature specific heat measurements on small (μg) single crystals of different superconducting and magnetic systems are presented. The device used in this work features a combination of high sensitivity and good accuracy over the temperature range 1-400 K and allows measurements in high magnetic fields. READ MORE

3. Hybrid superconductor junctions with diluted PtNi ferromagnetic interlayer
Abstract : This thesis describes experimental investigation of thin films made of diluted Pt 1-x Ni x ferromagnet alloy and Nb-Pt 1-x -Nb Josephson junctions. Such Hybrid Superconductor-Ferromagnet (S-F) Structures are of significant interest because of the new physics involved and possible applications in low temperature and spintronic devices. READ MORE

4. Magnetic deflagration and detonation in crystals of nanomagnets
Abstract : In this thesis we cover the dynamics of the macro magnetic transformations (spin avalanches) in crystals of molecular nanomagnets, also known as magnetic deflagration and detonation.Taking a single-molecule Hamiltonian, we calculate the dependence of Zeeman energy and the activation energy as a function of an external magnetic field at different angles relative to the easy axis of the crystal. 5. Experimental investigation of molecular solids and vanadium at high pressure and temperature
Abstract : Understanding high pressure effects on simple molecular system is of great interest for condensed matter science and geophysics. Accessing the static pressure and temperature regions found in planetary interiors is made possible by the development of the Diamond Anvil Cell technique. READ MORE
