  1. 1. Mathematical Reasoning : In physics and real-life context

    Author : Helena Johansson; Mats Andersson; Jesper Boesen; Morten Blomhøj; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Creative mathematical reasoning; Descriptive statistics; Differential item functioning; Figurative context; Imitative reasoning; Mathematical Reasoning Requirements; Mathematics tasks; National tests; Physics tasks; Real-life context; T-test; Upper secondary school; Creative mathematical reasoning; Descriptive statistics; Differential item functioning; Figurative context; Imitative reasoning; Mathematical Reasoning Requirements; Mathematics tasks; National tests; Physics tasks; Real-life context; T-test; Upper secondary school;

    Abstract : This thesis is a compilation of four papers in which mathematical reasoning is examined in various contexts, in which mathematics is an integral part. It is known from previous studies that a focus on rote learning and procedural mathematical reasoning hamper students’ learning of mathematics. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mathematical Reasoning in Physics Tests : Requirements, Relations, Dependence

    Author : Helena Johansson; Mats Andersson; Jesper Boesen; Kerstin Pettersson; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : By analysing and expanding upon mathematical reasoning requirements in physics tests, this licentiate thesis aims to contribute to the research studying how students’ knowledge in mathematics influence their learning of physics. A sample of physics tests from the Swedish National Test Bank in Physics was used as data, together with information of upper secondary students’ scores and grades on the tests. READ MORE

  3. 3. Solving the quantum scattering problem for systems of two and three charged particles

    Author : Mikhail Volkov; Nils Elander; William McCurdy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scattering theory; three body scattering; Atomic and molecular physics; Atom- och molekylfysik; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : A rigorous formalism for solving the Coulomb scattering problem is presented in this thesis. The approach is based on splitting the interaction potential into a finite-range part and a long-range tail part. In this representation the scattering problem can be reformulated to one which is suitable for applying exterior complex scaling. READ MORE

  4. 4. Learning Physics through Transduction : A Social Semiotic Approach

    Author : Trevor Stanton Volkwyn; John Airey; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; David Brookes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Introductory physics; transduction; interactive engagement; social semiotics; representational competence; probeware; mathematical tools; 1-D kinematics; coordinate systems; magnetic field; pedagogical affordance; disciplinary affordance; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis details the introduction of the theoretical distinction between transformation and transduction to Physics Education Research. Transformation refers to the movement of meaning between semiotic resources within the same semiotic system (e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. On string integrability : A journey through the two-dimensional hidden symmetries in the AdS/CFT dualities

    Author : Valentina Giangreco Marotta Puletti; Konstantin Zarembo; Gleb Arutyunov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; String Theory; AdS-CFT correspondence; Integrable Field theory; Sigma models; S-matrix; Factorized Scattering; Physics; Fysik; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : One of the main topics in the modern String Theory are the conjectured string/gauge (AdS/CFT) dualities. Proving such conjectures is extremely difficult since the gauge and string theory perturbative regimes do not overlap. In this perspective, the discovery of infinitely many conserved charges, i.e. READ MORE
