  1. 1. Spatial Strategies for Biodiversity Conservation

    Author : André Pinto da Silva; Mats Bjõrklund; Greta Bocedi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; global change; Southern Asia; mammals; ecological modelling; Biology with specialization in Animal Conservation; Biologi med inriktning mot zoologisk bevarandebiologi;

    Abstract : Biodiversity is being lost under alarming rates due to an unsustainable socio-economic trajectory causing global change. Such loss is unequally spread over the Earth, and Southern Asia has been and is projected to continue to be one of the most affected regions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cluster Observations and Theoretical Explanations of Broadband Waves in the Auroral Region

    Author : Marie Backrud; Jan-Erik Wahlund; Mats André; David Knudsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; ion acoustic waves; auroral region; anomalous resistivity; Cluster; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : Broadband extremely low-frequency wave emissions below the ion plasma frequency have been observed by a number of spacecraft and rockets on auroral field lines. The importance of these broadband emissions for transverse ion heating and electron acceleration in the auroral regions is now reasonably well established. READ MORE

  3. 3. Dissipation at the Earth's Quasi-Parallel Bow Shock

    Author : Rico Behlke; Mats André; Harald Kucharek; Andris Vaivads; Manfred Scholer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; collisionless shocks; wave-particle interactions; nonlinear phenomena; cross-shock potential; Cluster spacecraft; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : The Earth's bow shock is a boundary where the solar wind becomes decelerated from supersonic to subsonic speed before being deflected around the Earth. This thesis presents measurements by the Cluster spacecraft upstream and at the Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock where the angle between the upstream magnetic field and the bow shock normal is less than 45 degrees. 4. 4. Low-Energy Ion Escape from the Terrestrial Polar Regions

    Author : Erik Engwall; Anders I. Eriksson; Mats André; Thomas Moore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; space physics; ion outflow; polar wind; auroral upflows; atmospheric escape; magnetotail lobes; spacecraft wake; electric field measurements; Geocosmophysics and plasma physics; Geokosmofysik och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Abstract : The contemporary terrestrial atmosphere loses matter at a rate of around 100,000 tons per year. A major fraction of the net mass loss is constituted by ions, mainly H+ and O+, which escape from the Earth’s ionosphere in the polar regions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Electron-scale physics in space plasma : Thin boundaries and magnetic reconnection

    Author : Cecilia Norgren; Mats André; Jonathan Eastwood; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Most of the observable Universe consists of plasma, a kind of ionized gas that interacts with electric and magnetic fields. Large volumes of space are filled with relatively uniform plasmas that convect with the magnetic field. READ MORE
