  1. 1. Radiation induced biomarkers of individual sensitivity to radiation therapy

    Author : Sara Skiöld; Mats Harms-Ringdahl; Siamak Haghdoost; Mats Ljungman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; low dose ionizing radiation; radiation sensitivity; proteomics; whole blood; 8-oxo-dG; oxidative stress; acute adverse healthy tissue effects; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Fifty percent of solid cancers are treated with radiation therapy (RT). The dose used in RT is adjusted to the most sensitive individuals so that not more than 5% of the patients will have severe adverse healthy tissue effects. READ MORE

  2. 2. Induction of apoptosis in relation to chromatin structure and inhibition of replication by DNA damage from ionizing radiation

    Author : Jesper Torudd; Mats Harms-Ringdahl; Mats Ljungman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ionizing radiation; DNA-loop; replication fork; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : The theme of this thesis has been chromatin organization ranging from methodological studies to involvement in apoptotic response. The aims have been: (i) to compare the information obtained by the AVTD method and comet assay concerning DNA-loop organization, (ii) to test the hypothesis that DNA-loop relaxation could be the triggering signal for induction of apoptosis in G0-lymphocytes, and (iii) to study the dose response for inhibition of the replication fork movement and pathways for the DNA repair process at the replication fork. 4. 4. Studies of DNA repair strategies in response to complex DNA damages

    Author : Ainars Bajinskis; Mats Harms-Ringdahl; Bo Stenerlöw; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ionizing radiation; complex DNA damage; indirect effect of radiation; dimethyl sulfoxide; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study the role of the indirect actions of γ-rays and α-particles on the complexity of primary DNA damages and the repair fidelity of major DNA repair pathways: non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), homologous recombination repair (HRR) and base excision repair (BER). The complexity of radiation-induced damages increases and the proximity between damages decreases with increasing LET due to formation of ionization clusters along the particle track. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and their application for assessment of individual radiosensitivity

    Author : Siamak Haghdoost; Mats Harms-Ringdahl; Steffen Loft; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; oxidative stress; 8-oxo-dG; 8-oh-dG; Radiosensitivity; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Radiotherapy is one of the most common therapeutic methods for treatment of many types of cancer. Despite many decades of development and experience there is much to improve, both in efficacy of treatment and to decrease the incidences of adverse healthy tissue reactions. READ MORE
