  1. 6. The influence of soil and contaminant properties on the efficiency of physical and chemical soil remediation methods

    Author : Sofia Jonsson; Mats Tysklind; Peter Haglund; Staffan Lundstedt; Tuula Tuhkanen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fenton’s reagent; ozone; solvent washing; granular activated carbon; GAC; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract :  A vast number of sites that have been contaminated by industrial activities have been identified worldwide. Many such sites now pose serious risks to humans and the environment. Given the large number of contaminated sites there is a great need for efficient, cost-effective  remediation methods. READ MORE

  2. 7. Fate and transport of POPs in the aquatic environment : with focus on contaminated sediments

    Author : Sarah Josefsson; Karin Wiberg; Mats Tysklind; Kjell Leonardsson; Jonas S Gunnarsson; Jussi Kukkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioturbation; bioirrigation; bioaccumulation; secondary sources; buried contaminants; sediment remediation; active capping; thin-layer capping; Marenzelleria spp.; Baltic Sea; polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins; polychlorinated dibenzofurans; polychlorinated biphenyls; hexachlorobenzene; octachloro¬styrene; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; PCDD Fs; PCBs; HCB; OCS; PBDEs; water sampling; passive sampling; particulate fraction; freely dissolved; apparently dissolved; colloid; organic carbon; activated carbon; lignin; sediment-to-water flux; spring bloom; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are hydrophobic substances that readily sorb to organic matter in particles and colloids instead of being freely dissolved in the water phase. This sorption affects the bioavailability and environmental transport of the POPs. READ MORE

  3. 8. Computational methods for analyzing dioxin-like compounds and identifying potential aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligands : multivariate studies based on human and rodent in vitro data

    Author : Malin Larsson; Patrik Andersson; Anna Linusson; Mats Tysklind; Scott Boyer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dioxin-like compounds; multivariate analysis; toxic equivalency factor; quantitative structure-activity relationship; descriptors; virtual screening; in vitro; species variation; aryl hydrocarbon receptor;

    Abstract : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are omnipresent and persistent environmental pollutants. In particular, 29 congeners are of special concern, and these are usually referred to as dioxin-like compounds (DLCs). READ MORE

  4. 9. Determination of Antibiotics in the Swedish Environment with Emphasis on Sewage Treatment Plants

    Author : Richard Lindberg; Barbro Andersson; Mats Tysklind; Magnus Johansson; Alfredo Alder; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; antibiotics; environment; sewage treatment plants; antibiotika; miljö; avloppsreningsverk; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Metoder har utvecklats för att kunna bestämma tolv antibiotikasubstanser, vanliga inom human medicin, i miljöprover. Fokus lades på trimetoprim samt substanser från följande grupper: fluorokinoloner, sulfonamider, penicilliner, cefalosporiner, nitroimidazoler, tetracykliner samt makrolider. READ MORE

  5. 10. Long-term changes of mercury, lead and persistent organic pollutants in arctic environments

    Author : Carola Lindeberg; Ingemar Renberg; Mats Tysklind; Ove Emteryd; Edvard Karlsson; Per Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lake sediment; time trends; chlordane; hexachlorobenzene; mercury; lead; soil; climate changes; Arctic; Greenland; Sweden; Swedish mountains; PCB; PBDE; pesticides; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The Arctic represents a huge area with poor infrastructure contributing to limited possibilities to establish monitoring and research programs. From the investigations that have been performed we know that the arctic environment is affected by anthropogenic emissions from lower latitudes, but knowledge about underlying transport processes, the arctic pollution extent and the rates of changes are limited.
