  1. 1. Snow particle size investigations using digital image analysis - implications for ground observations and remote sensing of snow

    Author : Susanne Ingvander; Peter Peter Jansson; Matti Matti Leppäranta; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; snow; remote sensing; particle size; Antarctica; in-situ sampling; seasonal snow; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : During the past century climate warming has caused rapid changes in the Cryosphere. This has increased the need to accurately monitor rates of change in snow and ice in remote or sparsely populated areas where environmental observing capacity is limited. Monitoring snow cover requires understanding of the snow pack and the snow surface attributes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Geometry Calibration of IceCube : using Photon Timing from Downgoing Muons

    Author : Matti Jansson; Klas Hultqvist; Stefan Richter; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole has instrumented one cu-bic kilometer of ice by deploying digital optical modules (DOMs) in 86 drillholes, each containing a string of DOMs. So far IceCube has used the locationof the drill tower for the positions of DOMs in the transverse directions (x andy) to the vertical direction (z). 3. 3. Improvements for IceCube Event Reconstruction through Geometry Calibration and Photon Timing Distributions

    Author : Matti Jansson; Klas Hultqvist; Chad Findley; Aart Heijboer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Large detector systems for particle and astroparticle physics; Neutrino detectors; Splines; Maximum likelihood; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : The origin of high-energy cosmic rays is an unsolved mystery because cosmic rays do not travel in a straight line but are bent by magnetic fields due to their electric charge. High energy neutrinos are predicted to be created close to these origins, and are an unambiguous probe, while gamma rays could be obscured or created by other processes. READ MORE
