16. Material Characterization for Modelling of Sheet Metal Deformation and Failure
Abstract : Weight reduction is one possibility to reduce fuel consumption and emission of transportation vehicles. Sheet metals are often used in automotive and aerospace applications and therefore the weight reduction achieved by reducing the sheet metals thickness is an important contribution to weight reduction. 17. Numerical investigation on the formation mechanism of residual stress in metal cutting
Abstract : Residual stress can be introduced unintentionally into the workpiece with various magnitudes and distributions through all manufacturing processes. These stresses have a significant effect upon the performance of the final component. READ MORE

18. Rail Corrugation Growth on Curves
Abstract : The development of periodic irregularities with distinct wavelengths (corrugation) on the low rail of small radius curves is studied through mathematical modelling, numerical simulations, field measurements and laboratory investigations. One year of monitoring of roughness on the low rail of a 120 m radius curve on the metro of Stockholm Public Transport (SL) showed severe growth of rail corrugation with wavelengths of about 5 cm and 8 cm. 19. Combined thermal and mechanical loading of railway wheel treads. A numerical study of material response and cracking under braking conditions
Abstract : The scope of the thesis is prediction of the material response owing to combined thermal and mechanical loading of a railway wheel tread. The long-term objective is to improve models for prediction of surface-initiated Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) under the combined effect of mechanical loading due to rolling (and sliding) contact and thermal loading due to braking and/or wheel--rail friction. 20. Getting to grips with cartons : Interactions of carbonboard packages with an artificial finger
Abstract : Packaging is an important part of most products in our modern world. It produces waste, but it also enables products to reach consumers safely and efficiently. Hence, the proper design of packaging is becoming increasingly important. Historically, cartonboard packages were designed for box compression strength. READ MORE
