11. Secondary chlorophyll a luminescence decay kinetics from green algae and higher plants : mechanisms and application
Abstract : Barley protoplasts were shown to be a suitable experimental system for studies on the relative maximum during the decay of luminescence observed in most photosynthetic systems after excitation with far red light and in the presence of O2. The far red induced relative luminescencemaximum was shown to be a result of three coinciding events:*Randomization of the S-states of the water splitting system during illumination with far red light. 12. Permanent stoma after anterior resection for rectal cancer : prevalence and mechanisms
Abstract : While sphincter-saving surgery constitutes standard treatment for rectal cancer, anterior resection still harbours a significant risk of a permanent stoma in the long run. Although anastomotic leakage plays a major role in this surgical dilemma, the exact mechanisms are not known, while surveys indicate a stoma-free outcome is essential for a majority of patients. 13. Cell-penetrating peptides and bioactive cargoes : Strategies and mechanisms
Abstract : The cell membrane is an impermeable barrier for most macromolecules. Recently discovered cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have gained lot of attention because they can cross the membrane, and even more, carry cargoes with them. How CPPs enter cells is still not clear, while the delivery of different cargoes has been convincingly shown. READ MORE

14. Complement Activation Triggered by Biomaterial Surfaces : Mechanisms and Regulation
Abstract : Today there are a vast number of medical devices in temporary or permanent contact with human tissues. Blood-biomaterial contact is known to trigger the complement system and results in generation of fluid phase anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a, and surface-bound C3b and iC3b. READ MORE
