  1. 21. Simulation of deformable objects transported in fluid flow

    Author : Arash Alizad Banaei; Luca Brandt; Markus Holzner; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Deformable particles suspended in a viscous fluid can be found in many industrial and biological applications. In this thesis, two different numerical tools have been developed to simulate suspensions of capsules, thin membranes enclosing a second fluid and a rigid nucleus so to work as model for ”Eukaryotic” cells, and flexible slender bodies known as filaments/fibres. 2. 22. Simulation of individual cells in flow

    Author : Lailai Zhu; Luca Brandt; Michael Graham; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrodynamic interaction; swimming microorganisms; capsule; Stokes flow; finite element method; boundary integral method; general geometry Ewald method; spectral element method; viscoelastic fluid; cellular deformation; flow cytometry; cell sorting; microrheology; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 3. 23. Validated Modelling of Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices

    Author : Niklas Mellgren; Anders Dahlkild; Michael Vynnycky; Jesper Oppelstrup; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; lithium ion battery; polymer electrolyte fuel cell; modelling; model validation; parameter fitting; Fluid mechanics; Strömningsmekanik;

    Abstract : This thesis aims at formulating and validating models for electrochemical energy storage devices. More specifically, the devices under consideration are lithium ion batteries and polymer electrolyte fuel cells. A model is formulated to describe an experimental cell setup consisting of a LixNi0.8Co0. READ MORE

  4. 24. Assembly of microsystems for optical and fluidic applications

    Author : Sjoerd Haasl; Göran Stemme; Richard Syms; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Applied mechanics; microsystem technology; micromachining; assembly; active alignment; BCB; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses assembly issues encountered in optical and fluidic microsystem applications. In optics, the first subject concerns the active alignment of components in optical fibersystems. READ MORE

  5. 25. Hemodynamics of artificial devices used in extracorporeal life support

    Author : Francesco Fiusco; Lisa Prahl Wittberg; Katharine Fraser; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; computational fluid dynamics; hemorheology; platelet activation; thrombogenicity; extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; hemodynamics; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving therapy usedfor support in critical heart and/or lung failure. Patient’s blood is pumped viaan artificial lung for oxygenation outside of the body. The circuit is composedof a blood pump, cannulae for drainage and reinfusion, a membrane lung,tubing and connectors. READ MORE
