21. Simulation of deformable objects transported in fluid flow
Abstract : Deformable particles suspended in a viscous fluid can be found in many industrial and biological applications. In this thesis, two different numerical tools have been developed to simulate suspensions of capsules, thin membranes enclosing a second fluid and a rigid nucleus so to work as model for ”Eukaryotic” cells, and flexible slender bodies known as filaments/fibres. 22. Simulation of individual cells in flow
Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 23. Validated Modelling of Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices
Abstract : This thesis aims at formulating and validating models for electrochemical energy storage devices. More specifically, the devices under consideration are lithium ion batteries and polymer electrolyte fuel cells. A model is formulated to describe an experimental cell setup consisting of a LixNi0.8Co0. READ MORE

24. Assembly of microsystems for optical and fluidic applications
Abstract : This thesis addresses assembly issues encountered in optical and fluidic microsystem applications. In optics, the first subject concerns the active alignment of components in optical fibersystems. READ MORE

25. Hemodynamics of artificial devices used in extracorporeal life support
Abstract : Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving therapy usedfor support in critical heart and/or lung failure. Patient’s blood is pumped viaan artificial lung for oxygenation outside of the body. The circuit is composedof a blood pump, cannulae for drainage and reinfusion, a membrane lung, tubing and connectors. READ MORE
