  1. 1. Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a balloon catheter : experimental and clinical evaluation of a new form of treatment for menorrhagia

    Author : Britt Friberg; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; andrologi; Obstetrik; gynekologi; sexuality; gynaecology; andrology; reproduction; Obstetrics; balloon catheter; thermal coagulation; Menorrhagia; endometrial destruction; saline infusion sonography; uterine thermal conductivity; reproduktion; sexualitet;

    Abstract : Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a silicone balloon catheter is a new form of treatment for menorrhagia aimed at reducing menstrual blood loss. The purpose of the present work was to study, experimentally, the thermal effects on and the thermal conductivity of uterine tissue, to obtain a basis for the estimation of optimal treatment conditions by means of numerical analyses using a computer simulation model, to elucidate possible problems which may arise during the procedure, to evaluate how the patients tolerated this treatment and to judge which patients were suitable for this form of treatment and, finally, to study the uterine cavity after treatment and the long-term results of treatment. 2. 2. Physical Aspects of Thermotherapy - A study of heat transport with a view to treatment optimisation

    Author : Johan Olsrud; Sektion V; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; magnetic resonance; non-invasive; temperature; coagulation; prostatic; menorrhagia; liver tumour; finite element method FEM ; thermal conductivity; intracavitary; interstitial; laser; Thermotherapy; hyperthermia; MRI; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Medicin människa och djur ; Physics; Fysik; Fysicumarkivet A:1998:Olsrud;

    Abstract : Local treatment with the aim to destruct tissue by heating (thermotherapy) may in some cases be an alternative or complement to surgical methods, and has gained increased interest during the last decade. The major advantage of these, often minimally-invasive methods, is that the disease can be controlled with reduced treatment trauma and complications. READ MORE

  3. 3. Idiopathic menorrhagia : studies of angiogenesis and surgical therapy

    Author : Miriam Mints; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Menorrhagia; TCRE; endometrium; angiogenesis; VEGF; VEGFR1; -2; -3; gaps.;

    Abstract : Background: Excessive menstrual bleeding, menorrhagia (i.e. > 80 nil loss of blood) is a com-mon gynecological problem in women of reproductive age, accounting for over 20% of visits to gynecology outpatient clinics. The disorder may not only cause iron deficiency anemia but also considerable social discomfort and reduction in the quality of life. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects on menstrual physiology, pathology and medical treatment of menorrhagia

    Author : Måns Edlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Menstruation; endometrium; coiled arteries; endothelin; vasoconstriction; progesterone withdrawal; menorrhagia; bleeding disorder; von Willebrand Disease; fibrinolysis; tranexamic acid; desmopressin; platelet dysfunction; thrombin.;

    Abstract : Menstruation is the monthly process by which the endometrium in fertile women is discarded if no pregnancy occurs. The physiology and pathology of menstruation has been extensively studied; still several steps are not fully understood. Menorrhagia, heavy regular menstrual bleeding, is a gynaecological symptom of disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Methods in pharmacoepidemiology : four studies, four settings

    Author : Anders Sundström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, four studies using four different settings and designs are presented in which associations between pharmacological treatments and possible adverse drug reactions are investigated; some methodological considerations identified in them are discussed. In a population-based case-control study, using information from telephone interviews, the association between use of acid-suppressing drugs and the development of acute pancreatitis was investigated.
