  1. 1. Adaptive Mesh Refinement and Simulations of Unsteady Delta-Wing Aerodynamics

    Author : Yann Le Moigne; KTH; []
    Keywords : delta wing; high angle of attack; vortex; pitching; mesh refinement; UCAV; vortex sensor; tensor ofvelocity gradients;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)simulations of the flow around delta wings at high angles ofattack. These triangular wings, mainly used in militaryaircraft designs, experience the formation of two vortices ontheir lee-side at large angles of attack. READ MORE

    Author : Marcus Edstorp; Högskolan Väst; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Arc Welding; Weld Pool; Multiphysics Simulations; Moving Boundaries; Free Surfaces; Mesh Motion; Two-Phase Flow; Incompressible Flow; Electromagnetics; Finite Element Methods; Applied mathematics; Tillämpad matematik; Manufacturing engineering; Produktionsteknik; Manufacturing and materials engineering; Produktions- och materialteknik; Arc Welding; Weld Pool; Multiphysics Simulations; Moving Boundaries; Free Surfaces; Mesh Motion; Two-Phase Flow; Incompressible Flow; Electromagnetics; Finite Element Methods;

    Abstract : This investigation is devoted to the study of welding and its effect on the workpiece, focusing on the thermo and fluid dynamical phenomena occuring during a autogenous or nonautogenous arc fusion welding process. Its aim is to simulate the behaviour of the weld pool and analyze the consequence of the solid-liquid phase change, thus obtaining a methodology for predicting the appearance of weld defects related to solidification and cooling. 3. 3. Space-adaptive simulation of transition and turbulence in shear flows

    Author : Daniele Massaro; Philipp Schlatter; Saleh Rezaeiravesh; Alfredo Pinelli; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Turbulence; global stability; coherent structures; adaptive mesh refinement; Turbulens; global stabilitet; koherenta strukturer; adaptiv nätförfining; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : Transitional and turbulent shear flows are ubiquitous, from the boundary layer developing on an aeroplane wing to the flow within the aortic arch. In this thesis, we study wall-bounded and free shear flows through direct numerical simulations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Exploring the Interactive Landscape of Lipid Bilayers

    Author : Christian L. Wennberg; Erik Lindahl; Arnold Maliniak; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular Dynamics; lipid bilayer; cholesterol; permeability; long-range interactions; Lennard-Jones; dispersion; particle-mesh Ewald; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : One of the most important aspects for all life on this planet is theact to keep their cellular processes in a state where they do notreach equilibrium. One part in the upholding of this imbalanced stateis the barrier between the cells and their surroundings, created bythe cell membrane. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian Finite Element Method

    Author : Lars Olovsson; Kenneth Runesson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; large deformation plasticity; FEM; ALE; multi-material Euler; machining simulations;

    Abstract : This thesis has been devoted to the study and development of algorithms for Finite Element (FE) simulations of mechanical processes involving large deformations. Aspects of three different formulations have been considered:(i) The single material Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation is a method where the FE mesh is allowed to move independently to the material flow.
