  1. 1. Making Meteorology : Social Relations and Scientific Practice

    Author : Mikaela Sundberg; Árni Sverrisson; Steven Yearley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; scientific practice; social worlds; meteorology; climate research; Sociology; Sociologi;

    Abstract : This thesis is about the production of knowledge in meteorological research. Meteorology is an interesting case because of its crucial role in defining the climate change problem, but also because of its reliance on simulation modeling, a comparatively little studied scientific practice. 3. 3. Optical Turbulence Characterization for Ground-Based Astronomy

    Author : Susanna Hagelin; Anna Rutgersson; Elena Masciadri; Valentina Zitelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; site testing; atmospheric effects; turbulence; optical turbulence; applied meteorology; mesoscale models; Meteorology; Meteorologi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Meteorologi; Meteorology;

    Abstract : The optical turbulence, which creates perturbations of the wavefronts coming from the stars, is caused by small-scale fluctuations in the index of refraction of the atmosphere and is a problem for astronomers because it limits the maximum resolution of the ground-based telescopes. One way of identifying the best sites to build astronomical observatories, where the influence of the optical turbulence is as small as possible, is to use the standard meteorological parameters to get a first idea of the potential of a site. 4. 4. Processes important for forecasting of clouds over snow

    Author : Martin Hagman; Gunilla Svensson; Victoria Sinclair; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary-layer meteorology; WRF; Initialization; Stratocumulus clouds; Parameterization; Stable boundary layer; Single Column Model; meteorologi; Meteorology;

    Abstract : The Swedish Armed Forces setup of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) has problems to forecast low clouds in stably stratified conditions when the ground is covered by snow. The aim of this thesis is to understand what causes this deficit. READ MORE

  5. 5. Boundary Layer Parametrization in Numerical Weather Prediction Models

    Author : Jacob Svensson; Gunilla Svensson; Michael Tjernström; Patrick Samuelsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary-Layer Meteorology; Numerical Weather Prediction; Turbulence parametrization; COAMPS; IFS; meteorologi; Meteorology;

    Abstract : Numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate models have shown to have a challenge to correctly simulate stable boundary layers and diurnal cycles. This aim of this study is to evaluate, describe and give suggestions for improvements of the descriptions of stable boundary layers in operational NWP models. Two papers are included. READ MORE
