  1. 1. Fate of Pharmaceuticals and Their Transformation Products in Rivers : An integration of target analysis and screening methods to study attenuation processes

    Author : Zhe Li; Anna Sobek; Michael McLachlan; Michael Radke; Kathrin Fenner; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pharmaceuticals; transformation products; fate; river; suspect screening; non-target screening; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are environmental contaminants causing steadily increasing concern due to their high usage, ubiquitous distribution in the aquatic environment, and potential to exert adverse effects on the ecosystems. After being discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), pharmaceuticals can undergo transformation processes in surface waters, of which microbial degradation in river sediments is considered highly significant. 2. 2. An integrated approach to study pharmaceuticals and their microbial transformation products: formation and environmental behavior in water/sediment systems

    Author : Zhe Li; Michael Radke; Anna Sobek; Magnus Åberg; Urs Berger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are emerging organic micropollutants that are frequently detected in the aquatic environment. While information on their environmental occurrence is substantial, knowledge gaps exist with respect to their environmental transformation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Transformation of Micropollutants in the Hyporheic Zone

    Author : Malte Posselt; Jonathan P. Benskin; Michael Radke; Merle Plassmann; Magnus Breitholtz; Ian Cousins; Gudrun Massmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; micropollutants; hyporheic zone; biodegradation; bacteria; pharmaceuticals; transformation products; LC-MS MS; macrophytes; bedforms; suspect screening; mesocosm; flume; river; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Hyporheic zones (HZs) are reactive transition regions between rivers and aquifers which are thought to play an important role in the attenuation of micropollutants. Micropollutants are chemical substances such as pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals or personal care products that are found in trace concentrations in the environment and that can be harmful to organisms.
