2. Some aspects of convection as well as graphite and carbide formations during casting
Abstract : It is an established fact that segregation during casting affects the physical properties of carbon-based ferro alloys; this motivates the study of the segregation behaviour of carbon and carbide-forming solute elements. In this context, this thesis investigates two different situations: the effects of cooling rate and turbulence on the precipitation behaviour of the graphite nodules in nodular cast iron; the nature of carbide precipitation in a bearing steel grade and the effects of subsequent soaking on these carbides. 3. Validated Modelling of Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices
Abstract : This thesis aims at formulating and validating models for electrochemical energy storage devices. More specifically, the devices under consideration are lithium ion batteries and polymer electrolyte fuel cells. A model is formulated to describe an experimental cell setup consisting of a LixNi0.8Co0. READ MORE

4. On the Inoculation and Graphite Morphologies of Cast Iron
Abstract : Research was conducted to understand the nucleation mechanism of graphite flakes and nodules and the effect of various elements on the growth morphology of graphite. Investigations were started on flake graphite cast iron. The effect of S on the graphite morphology and MnS was experimentally analysed. READ MORE

5. Pores, inclusions and electromagnetic stirring : Topics from the continuous casting of steel
Abstract : This thesis deals with two topics of relevance to the continuous casting of steel,in view of their importance as regards the quality of the final solidified structure. The first concerns the precipitation of gas pores and inclusions in the interden-dritic region of the solidifying metal.
