    Abstract : The study of bacterial evolution is fundamental for addressing current problems of antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases and lays a solid foundation for successful and rational design in biotechnology and synthetic biology. The main aim of this thesis is to test evolutionary hypotheses, largely based on theoretical considerations and sequence analysis, by designing scenarios in a laboratory setting to obtain experimental data. 2. 2. Distribution and activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in marine and estuarine waters

    University dissertation from Växjö, Kalmar : Linnaeus University Press

    Author : Hanna Farnelid; Linnéuniversitetet.; [2013]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; 454-pyrosequencing; diazotrophs; heterotrophic bacteria; marine bacteria; marine microbial ecology; microbiology; nifH; nitrogenase; nitrogen fixation; PCR; qPCR;

    Abstract : In aquatic environments the availability of nitrogen (N) generally limits primary production. N2-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) can convert N2 gas into ammonium and provide significant input of N into the oceans. Cyanobacteria are thought to be the main N2-fixers but diazotrophs also include a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria. READ MORE

  3. 3. The discovery of antiviral compounds targeting adenovirus and herpes simplex virus assessment of synthetic compounds and natural products

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå Universitet

    Author : Mårten Strand; Umeå universitet.; [2014]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; virology; antiviral; adenovirus; herpes simplex virus; small molecule; inhibitor; hsv; drug discovery; medicinsk virologi; Medical Virology; läkemedelskemi; läkemedelskemi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : There is a need for new antiviral drugs. Especially for the treatment of adenovirus infections, since no approved anti-adenoviral drugs are available. Adenovirus infections in healthy persons are most often associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and infections of the eye. These infections can be severe, but are most often self-limiting. 4. 4. Bacterioplankton in the light of seasonality and environmental drivers

    University dissertation from Växjö : Linnaeus University Press

    Author : Carina Bunse; Linnéuniversitetet.; [2017]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science; marine bacteria; marine microbiology; seasonal succession; ocean acidification; proteorhodopsin; photoheterotrophy; microbial time series;

    Abstract : Bacterioplankton are keystone organisms in marine ecosystems. They are important for element cycles, by transforming dissolved organic carbon and other nutrients. Bacterioplankton community composition and productivity rates change in surface waters over spatial and temporal scales. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effect of environmental factors on bacterioplankton community composition, diversity and functionality

    University dissertation from Växjö, Kalmar : Linnaeus University Press

    Author : Johanna Sjöstedt; Linnéuniversitetet.; [2013]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; marine microbiology; bacterioplankton; community composition; diversity; functionality; environmental factors; disturbance; distribution;

    Abstract : The ocean covers more than 70 % of the Earth surface and represents the largest ecosystem on Earth. Bacteria are an important part of the marine food web not only in remineralisation but also since they utilize dissolved organic matter (DOM) and make the energy available to higher trophic levels.
