3. Microbially induced concrete degradation in subsea tunnels - Community structure of biofilms from sprayed reinforced concrete in the Oslofjord tunnel
Abstract : Microbially induced concrete deterioration has been discovered in several Norwegian subsea tunnels with significant disintegration of the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and steel fibre corrosion in areas with leakages of saline groundwater. Complex microbial biofilm activity together with abiotic attack from saline ground water, with high concentrations of Cl−, SO42−, Mg2+ and HCO3−, are responsible for the degradation in the specific subsea tunnel environment. 4. Novel Microsystem Techniques for Liquid Manipulation and Pressure Sensing
Abstract : Scaling down operations and functions into the fascinating micro world not only improve performance, lower costs, and enable easier integration, but also opens the door to new functionalities. This truly multidisciplinary thesis presents novel solutions to current and relevant challenges in the areas of 1) on-chip liquid manipulation which has applications in micro total analysis systems, medical diagnostics, and drug discovery and 2) pressure sensing which has an established market in the automotive and industrial processes industry. 5. Microfabrication and Integration Using Sub-Picosecond Laser Pulses and Magnetic Assembly
Abstract : Microfabricated devices and systems have many exciting applications such as accelerometers for triggering the launching of airbags in cars, gyroscopes for sensing the rotations of mobile phones, and micromirror arrays for controlling light reflection in digital light projectors. These devices are currently produced using semiconductor manufacturing techniques, which are suitable for large volumes of mostly planar structures. READ MORE
