  1. 1. Device Technology Based on High Temperature Superconductors and Microwave Breakdown in Gases

    Author : Martin Löfgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; distortion; penetration depth; surface resistance; transmit-receive switch; coupled-grain model; high-power; microwave; pulse; surface impedance; breakdown; propagation; modulator; air; superconductor; transmission line; resonator; coplanar waveguide; plasma;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with two separate fields of microwave technology. The first section treats microwave characterization and applications of high temperature superconducting (HTS) thin films, while the second section treats microwave breakdown in transmit-receive (TR) switches and in air. Within the first section, four main topics are adressed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microwave Breakdown in Inhomogeneous Fields

    Author : Joel Rasch; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; corona; inhomogeneous fields; Microwave breakdown; multipactor;

    Abstract : Microwave breakdown continues to be a risk in many applications involving the transmission and reception of microwave frequency signals. Satellite communication is especially interesting from the research point of view because of the extreme costs, and limited testing possibilities. READ MORE

  3. 3. High Temperature Superconducting and Tunable Ferroelectric Microwave Devices

    Author : Erik F. Carlsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; varactors; tunable microwave circuits; conformal mapping; cryogenic probe station; ferroelectrics; high temperature superconductors; microwave circuits; narrow-band filters; phase-shifter;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses some applications of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) and ferroelectric materials in tunable microwave devices and circuits. The work is divided into three main areas: i) modeling of multilayered structures including ferroelectric layers, ii) realization and characterization of tunable coplanar waveguides (CPW), capacitors and resonators based on ferroelectrics, and iii) an investigation of microstrip HTS K-band filters. 4. 4. Engineering and detecting microwave photons

    Author : Sankar Raman Sathyamoorthy; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microwave photon detection; Quantum optics; open quantum systems.; tunable cavity; cross-Kerr effect; circuit QED;

    Abstract : Microwave quantum optics using superconducting circuits, also known as circuit QED, is a recent and promising field to study light-matter interactions at the fundamental level. In this field, artificial atoms made of superconducting elements interact with microwave photons routed through one dimensional transmission lines. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microwave Transistor Noise Model Extraction Methods and a Non-Contacting Scattering Parameter Measurement Method

    Author : Jörgen Stenarson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; extraction; S-parameter; noise parameter; vector network analyzer; electro-magnetic probe; microwave; non-contacting testing; transistor noise model; VNA; EM-probe; non-invasive testing;

    Abstract : This thesis has two parts. The first part discuss noise model extraction methods for FETs. The second part describe theory and implementation of a non-contacting S-parameter measurement method. Noise is an important aspect for a circuit designer, because noise generated in the circuit is a sensitivity limiting factor. READ MORE
