  1. 1. Midkine - a host defence protein

    Author : Sara Nordin; allergologi och palliativ medicin Lungmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antimicrobial polypeptides; Midkine; antibacterial; antifungal; innate immunity; epithelial surfaces;

    Abstract : Every day we encounter many potentially harmful microbes in our environment. The epithelial linings constitute an anatomical barrier protecting us and they also produce antimicrobial polypeptides (AMPs) that act as a chemical barrier. These AMPs are small and positively charged, killing a broad range of microbes rapidly. READ MORE

  2. 2. On Mechanisms Impairing Airway Host Defence in Cystic Fibrosis

    Author : Sandra Jovic; allergologi och palliativ medicin Lungmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease, caused by mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene. The gene codes for a protein that serve as chloride channel. In cystic fibrosis, this protein is lacking or has a defect function resulting in a thick and sticky mucus of the airways. READ MORE

  3. 3. Small Intestinal Neuroendocrine Tumors : Clinical Studies, Novel Serum Biomarkers and Sensitivity to Cytotoxic and Targeted Agents

    Author : Kosmas Daskalakis; Peter Stålberg; Per Hellman; Olov Norlén; Robert Bränström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SI-NET; fibrosis; locoregional surgery; liver transplantation; biomarkers; ex vivo sensitivity.;

    Abstract : Small Intestinal Neuroendocrine Tumors (SI-NETs) are indolent neoplasms with an increasing annual incidence of approximately 1/100 000 people. They are often diagnosed at a late stage, restricting treatment efficacy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Deciphering the Alk signaling pathway in Drosophila

    Author : Fredrik Hugosson; Ruth H. Palmer; Osamu Shimmi; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila; Alk; RTK; visceral mesoderm; signal transduction; growth factor; transcription factor; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : In Drosophila melanogaster the visceral mesoderm (VM) develops during embryogenesis in a process where myoblasts become specified to generate two distinct cell types, the founder cells (FCs) and the fusion competent myoblasts (FCMs) that consequently fuses. The cell specification is dependent on cell signaling mediated by the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (Alk) and its ligand Jelly belly (Jeb), how this further sets up different identity programs that drive myoblasts to differentiate into FCs and FCMs is still not well understood.
