1. Carbohydrate Levels and Fructan Metabolism in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Leaves : effects of manipulating mineral nutrition and photosynthesis
Abstract : Carbohydrate levels and fructan metabolism were studied in the leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Agneta) plants subjected to phosphorous (P)-deficiency, nitrogen (N)-deficiency and N-resupply following the N-deficiency. READ MORE

2. The effect of protein intake and physical exercise on energy turnover and substrate utilisation at energy balance in man
Abstract : The principal goal of the thesis has been to evaluate the effect of protein intake and physical exercise on energy turnover and substrate utilisation. Body composition assessment is of importance as an indicator of the energy balance. Therefore, in the first study the aim was to develop new models to estimate body composition more accurately. 3. Influence of water conditions on growth and mineral nutrient uptake of native plants on clacareous soil
Abstract : The studies presented in Papers I to IV illustrate the importance of soil moisture in soil solution chemistry and response of native plants to the changes induced by change in moisture regime. With the help of glasshouse experiments I tried to study the influence of different treatments of soil moisture conditions on the mineral uptake by native plants of calcareous soil. READ MORE

4. Long-term effects of growth hormone replacement in hypopituitary adults on body composition, bone mass and cardiovascular risk factors
Abstract : Growth hormone (GH) deficient (GHD) adults have decreased bone mass and muscle strength, impaired body composition, disturbed serum lipid pattern and increased morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. GH replacement normalizes most of these aberrations within the first year of treatment. READ MORE

5. Glucocorticoids - outcome in patients with glucocorticoid deficiency and Cushing's syndrome
Abstract : Glucocorticoids (GCs) are steroid hormones that have a major impact on human metabolism and are essential for life. Chronic GC overexposure, called Cushing’s syndrome, is characterized by central obesity, muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance and neurocognitive impairment. READ MORE
