21. Gene Expression Studies of Hematologic Malignacies
Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to characterize hematologic malignancies using gene expression profiling in order to obtain an improved classification and to study deregulated transcriptional networks in leukemia. In the first study (Article I), the gene expression profiles of hematologic cell lines were analyzed to investigate whether such cell lines maintain expression profiles that are characteristic of their primary genetic changes. 22. Radioimmunotherapy of experimental ovarian cancer with Astatine-211. An in vivo model for consolidation treatment in women
Abstract : About 850 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in Sweden every year. In 75 % of the patients the tumour has spread outside the ovaries. The standard treatment is surgery followed by six courses of combination chemotherapy. In spite of a very high frequency of clinical complete responses the 5-year survival is not satisfactory. 23. Umbilical cord blood transplantation : clinical outcome, chimerism development, and in vitro expansion of T-cells for clinical use
Abstract : Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an alternative graft source in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The unique advantages with UCB as a stem cell source are found in the permissibility for human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-mismatch, rapid availability, and comparatively risk-free graft collection. 24. Stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma : clinical aspects and experimental gene transfer studies
Abstract : Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignant disease considered essentially incurable despite its sensitivity to cytotoxic chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation. High-dose chemo/radiotherapy with allogeneic- or autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (tx) can induce a disease-free state and may prolong survival and offer an improved quality of life to MM patients. 25. DNA methylation as a prognostic marker i acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Abstract : Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood malignancy. Most ALL cases originate from immature B-cells (BCP-ALL) and are characterized by reoccurring structural genetic aberrations. These aberrations hold information of the pathogenesis of ALL and are used for risk stratification in treatment. READ MORE
