  1. 6. Vascular density and bone marrow fibrosis in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    Author : Ulrika Norén Nyström; Anders Bergh; Erik Forestier; Göran Roos; Henrik Schrøder; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia; microvessel density; bone marrow fibrosis; in vitro drug resistance; minimal residual disease; outcome; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Background: In childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the cure rate has now reached 80% in the western world. Even so, 15¬–20% will die from the disease or treatment-related causes, among them children who did not present any known unfavorable features at diagnosis. READ MORE

  2. 7. Expression profiling using manifold supports

    Author : Anette Hagberg; Joakim Lundeberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; mRNA; expression; minimal residual disease MRD ; chronic myeloid leukemia CML ; recombinant human erythropoietin r-HuEpo ; anemia; insulin dependent diabetes mellitus IDDM ; transplantation; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Medical Genetics; medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : Analyses of mRNA provides a condensed view of gene structure and quantitative analysis can reveal the induction of physiological or pathological gene expression programs. This thesis describes a new method for mRNA isolation, followed by sensitive real time detection via polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in order to quantitate transcripts of interest. READ MORE

  3. 8. Cell death mechanisms of anti-cancer agents and treatment response in acute leukemia

    Author : Edward Laane; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : acute leukemia; glucocorticoids; doxorubicin; apoptosis; autophagy; minimal residual disease; dendritic cells;

    Abstract : Acute leukemia (AL) is a fatal disease, which causes rapid death in the absence of appropriate chemotherapeutic intervention. Long-term survival rates vary from 80% in childhood lymphoblastic AL (ALL) to 10-20% in adult myeloid AL (AML). READ MORE

  4. 9. Standardization and application of quantitative PCR methods in patients with hematological malignancies

    Author : Maria Malec; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Polymerase chain reaction; RQ-PCR; Minimal Residual Disease; Acute leukemia; Hodgkin s Lymphoma; cytokines;

    Abstract : Using modem combination chemotherapy regimens, it has been possible to increase the rate of complete remission (CR) in acute lymphoblastic (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The major reason for treatment failure in acute leukemia (AL) is the resistance of leukemic blasts to chemotherapeutic agents, which is accompanied by an inability of the immune system to eradicate residual leukemic cells surviving initial treatment. 5. 10. Interphase cytogenetics and cytokine therapy in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia

    Author : Per Bernell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : myelodysplastic syndromes; acute myeloid leukemia; FISH; clonality; lineageinvolvement; minimal residual disease; EIPO; GM-CSF.;

    Abstract : Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) comprise a group of clonal hematopoietic bone marrow cell disorders, characterized by a variable degree of anemia, granulocytopenia and/or thrombocytopenia and with a substantial risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (MDS-AML). In the present thesis a method based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was developed which allows cytogenetic studies on morphological identified peripheral blood and bone marrow cells (MGG/FISH).
