1. Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems for neural interfaces - a novel approach for improved biocompatibility
Abstract : The overall purpose of this thesis was to reduce brain tissue responses around implanted microelectrodes using a pharmacological strategy. One of the main aims was to develop and evaluate drug delivery systems that allow local administration of anti-inflammatory pharmaceutics. READ MORE

3. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus
Abstract : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 4. Calcium-induced mitochondrial permeability transition in CNS-derived mitochondria - Pharmacological aspects of specificity and toxicity in neuroprotection
Abstract : Mitochondria are the main site for energy conversion in the cell. Under certain circumstances, such as excess calcium retention or production of reactive oxygen species, a pore forms at contact sites between the outer and the normally impermeable inner mitochondrial membrane. READ MORE

5. Role of spinal and peripheral HMGB1 in arthritis-induced pain
Abstract : Chronic pain is one of the most debilitating and repeatedly reported symptoms by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Despite good disease control achieved with disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), joint pain remains a major problem for a subgroup of patients. READ MORE
