  1. 16. Mitochondrial differentiation during the early development of the amphibian embryo

    Author : Lennart Nelson; Barbara Cannon; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Amphibia; Xenopus laevis; Ambystoma mexicanum; mitochondria; differentiation; enzymes; carriers; oxidation; development; Zoophysiology; zoofysiologi;

    Abstract : Mitochondria from Xenopus laevis and Ambystoma mexica- num embryos between fertilization and the beginning of feeding were studied: the former with respect to metabolic behaviour, enzyme pattern and carrier activity, and the latter with respect to morphological parameters.The metabolic behaviour of mitochondria was studied by assessing the rates of oxygen uptake in presence of various substrates. 2. 17. Mitochondrial permeability transition following calcium overload. - Its role in neuronal cell death and potential as a pharmacological target

    Author : Magnus Hansson; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; farmakognosi; farmaci; Bioenergetik; Bioenergetics; neuropsykologi; toxikologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; Neurology; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurodegeneration; Mitochondria; Brain; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; Farmakologi; toxicology;

    Abstract : There is currently no clinically available drug with neuroprotective properties to limit the evolving cell death following e.g. stroke or traumatic brain injury. The mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) is a potential pathological mechanism causing cell death in the CNS. READ MORE

  3. 18. Cell-penetrating peptide targeting mitochondria : Design, synthesis, characterization, and biological effects

    Author : Carmine Pasquale Cerrato; Ülo Langel; Lena Mäler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cell-penetrating peptide; mitochondrial targeting; ROS reduction; mitochondrial membrane potential; antioxidant activity; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : More than twenty years after the discovery of the first cell-penetrating peptide (CPP), a large number of both naturally occurring as well as engineered CPPs have been discovered. Generally, CPPs are short polycationic sequences of less than 30 amino acids that are able to translocate different cargoes into cells. READ MORE

  4. 19. From green to yellow : a leaf story

    Author : Olivier Keech; Per Gardeström; Pierre Dizengremel; Lee Sweetlove; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; chloroplasts; cytoskeleton; darkness; metabolism; microscopy; mitochondria; microtubules; senescence; system redox; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : När ett blad gulnar genomgår det både morfologiska och metaboliska förändringar. Denna process benämns senescence och en förbättrad förståelse av dess mekanismer är viktiga både ur ett grundvetenskapligt perspektiv och för potentiella bioteknologiska applikationer. READ MORE

  5. 20. Regulation of proton-coupled electron transfer in cytochrome c oxidase : The role of membrane potential, proton pathways and ATP

    Author : Markus Björck; Peter Brzezinski; Thorsten Friedrich; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytochrome c oxidase; charge transfer; membrane potential; membrane protein; mitochondria; ATP; proton pump; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Cytochrome c oxidase (CytcO) is the final electron acceptor of the respiratory chain. In this chain a current of electrons, derived from degradation of nutrients, along with protons, are used to reduce oxygen to water. The reaction is exergonic and the excess energy is used to pump protons across the membrane. READ MORE
