16. Estimation of the Elastic Moduli of Porous Materials using Analytical Methods, Numerical Methods, and Image Analysis
Abstract : The effective bulk modulus and effective shear modulus of porous materials having various types of pore shapes are investigated, using both analytical and numerical methods. These solutions, and the scaling laws that are derived with the aid of these solutions, are then used to make predictions of the effective elastic moduli of some sandstones and ceramics, based on two-dimensional images of the pore space. 17. Admissible covers, modular operads and modular forms
Abstract : This thesis contains three articles related to operads and moduli spaces of admissible covers of curves. In Paper A we isolate cohomology classes coming from modular forms inside a certain space of admissible covers, thereby showing that this moduli space can be used as a substitute for a Kuga–Sato variety. Abstract : We study a generalized twistor correspondence between irreducible G-structures (with torsion in general) on complex manifolds Z and moduli spaces M of deformations of isotropic homogeneous submanifolds X in complex contact manifolds Y.For any irreducible G-structure on a complex manifold M we present an explicit construction of a contact manifold (a generalized twistor space) Y with contact line bundle L and a family F of isotropic submanifolds X in Y having M as its moduli space. Abstract : This thesis is concerned with perturbative aspects of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in a space-time of the form T3xR, in the regime where the gauge coupling is weak. Wave functions of vacuum states of super Yang-Mills theoriesare supported on the moduli space of flat connections, and we consider a semi-classical treatment of such theories, obtained by expanding the fields around some normalizable zero energy background field configuration.
