  1. 1. Dating Divergence Times in Phylogenies

    Author : Cajsa Lisa Anderson; Kåre Bremer; Katleen M. Pryer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; systematic biology; divergence time; nonprametric rate smoothing; Bayesian; multidivtime; eudicots; Neoaves; monocots; dating; molecular clock; relaxed clock; age constraint; fossil; calibration; PATHd8; penalized likelihood; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns different aspects of dating divergence times in phylogenetic trees, using molecular data and multiple fossil age constraints.Datings of phylogenetically basal eudicots, monocots and modern birds (Neoaves) are presented. Large phylograms and multiple fossil constraints were used in all these studies. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Origin of the Genus Flavivirus and the Ecology of Tick-Borne Pathogens

    Author : John H.-O. Pettersson; Thomas Jaenson; Sven Bergström; Kenneth Nilsson; Mikael Thollesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Flavivirus; Virus dating; Molecular dating; Biogeography; Ixodes ricinus; Minimum infection rate; TBE; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; Rickettsia helvetica; Anaplasma phagocytophilum; Infection prevalence; RT-PCR; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Abstract : The present thesis examines questions related to the temporal origin of the Flavivirus genus and the ecology of tick-borne pathogens. In the first study, we date the origin and divergence time of the Flavivirus genus. It has been argued that the first flaviviruses originated after the last glacial maximum. READ MORE

  3. 3. Snake Gourds, Parasites and Mother Roasting : Medicinal plants, plant repellents, and Trichosanthes (Cucurbitaceae) in Lao PDR

    Author : Hugo J. de Boer; Lars Björk; Mats Thulin; Thomas Jaenson; Victoria Reyes-Garcia; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Trichosanthes; Ethnobotany; Similarity of Knowledge; Biogeography; Molecular Dating; Brou; Saek; Kry; Mother roasting; Postpartum healthcare; Parturition; Childbirth; Traditional Medicine; Plant repellents; Fermented fish; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biology with specialization in Systematics;

    Abstract : Background. Traditional plant use was studied in Lao PDR. Research focused on medicinal plant use by the Brou, Saek and Kry ethnic groups, traditional plant repellents against parasitic arthropods and leeches, and the phylogeny and biogeography of the medicinally-important snake gourd genus (Trichosanthes, Cucurbitaceae).  Methods. 4. 4. Evolution of the Biodiversity Hotspot of Madagascar from the Eye of Diving Beetles : Phylogeny, colonization and speciation

    Author : Rasa Bukontaite; Johannes Bergsten; Ingi Agnarsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dytiscidae; diving beetles; Biogeography; Phylogeny; Dating; phylogenetic informativeness; colonization; speciation; microendemism; Madagascar; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Abstract : Dytiscidae, contains numerous endemic and non-endemic species on Madagascar. Their evolutionary history is largely unknown on the island. Herein, I use analyses to infer phylogenetic relationship among groups of diving beetles, with a focus on the subfamily Dytiscinae and endemic species in two other groups of Dytiscidae. READ MORE

  5. 5. People of the Dolmens and Stone Cists : An archaeogenetic Investigation of Megalithic Graves from the Neolithic Period on Gotland

    Author : Magdalena Fraser; Kjel Knutsson; Mattias Jakobsson; Paul Wallin; Anders Götherström; Per Åke Persson; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : The study of ancient genomics of pre-historic human remains has in recent years offered unprecedented knowledge regarding pre-historic migration and population structure on the European continent which has fundamentally altered the current views in the archaeological community. However, the merging of the two fields, archaeology and genetics, is still in its infancy and much work is still needed in order for these fields to integrate. READ MORE
