11. Protein Folding and DNA Origami
Abstract : In this thesis, the folding process of the de novo designed polypeptide chignolin was elucidated through atomic-scale Molecular Dynamics (MD) computer simulations. In a series of long timescale and replica exchange MD simulations, chignolin’s folding and unfolding was observed numerous times and the native state was identified from the computed Gibbs free-energy landscape. 12. KNOW YOUR ENEMY : Characterizing Pathogenic Biomaterials Using Laser Tweezers
Abstract : Diseases caused by pathogenic agents such as bacteria and viruses result in devastating costs on personal and societal levels. However, it is not just the emergence of new diseases that is problematic. Antibiotic resistance among bacteria makes uncomplicated infections difficult and lethal. READ MORE

13. Unveiling Mechanistic Details of Macromolecular Interactions: Structural Design and Molecular Modelling of DNA-Protein Systems in Their Active State
Abstract : Molecular structure is fundamental for understanding mechanisms of molecular interactions. This applies not least to understanding biological function: every biological cell, whether bacterial or human, is an immensely complex system of thousands of molecules that exist in constant motion and interaction with each other. 14. Crystallography in Four Dimensions : Methods and Applications
Abstract : The four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water is the most exothermic non-photochemical reaction available to biology. A detailed molecular description of this reaction is needed to understand oxygen-based redox processes. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a haem-containing redox enzyme capable of catalysing the reduction of dioxygen to water. READ MORE

15. Simulating Functional Cycles and Drug Modulation in Ligand-gated Ion Channels
Abstract : Understanding the intricate motions and conformational changes that govern biological processes remains a fascinating and challenging endeavor. The research presented in this thesis aims to elucidate the dynamic processes underlying biological functions, specifically focusing on the dynamics of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs), which play a crucial role in signal transduction within the brain.
