1. Numerical simulation of the dynamics of a trapped molecular ion
Abstract : This thesis explores the dynamics of a heteronuclear diatomic molecular ion, possessing a permanent electric dipole moment, µ, which is trapped in a linear Paul trap and can interact with an off-resonance laser field. To build our model we use the rigid-rotor approximation, where the dynamics of the molecular ion are limited to its translational and rotational motions of the center-of-mass. READ MORE

2. Ultrafast Photo-induced Reaction Dynamics of Small Molecules
Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is the investigation of the dissociation dynamics of aryl halides using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. In the monohalogenated aryl halides, iodo-, bromo- and chlorobenzene, the rate of dissociation following excitation at 266 nm in the gas phase increased with increasing mass of the halogen atom. 3. Polymer and Protein Physics : Simulations of Interactions and Dynamics
Abstract : Proteins can, without any exaggeration, be called the "building blocks of life". Their physical properties depend not only on the chemical structure but also on their geometric shape. In this thesis, I investigate protein geometry using several different methods. We start with a coarse-graining model to study the general behavior of polymers. READ MORE

4. Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Atomic and Molecular Quantum Dynamics
Abstract : An all-pervading feature of the work presented in this thesis is the study of ultrafast dynamics, both theoretically and experimentally, in terms of time-dependent wave functions (wave packets). We have experimentally, by pump-probe fluorescence spectroscopy, examined spin-orbit interactions, by time-tracing molecular wave packets on excited states of diatomic rubidium, and the main channels causing the fast predissociation from one of those states is revealed. 5. Studies of Molecular and Cluster Fragmentation Using Synchrotron Radiation: Measurements and Models
Abstract : A new spectrometer for studying photoinduced fragmentation has been designed and commissioned. The instrument produces a detailed view of the energy and angular emission of fragments, which in the case of small molecules can be related to their geometry at the moment of dissociation. READ MORE
