11. Creating and Probing Extreme States of Materials : From Gases and Clusters to Biosamples and Solids
Abstract : Free-electron lasers provide high intensity pulses with femtosecond duration and are ideal tools in the investigation of ultrafast processes in materials. Illumination of any material with such pulses creates extreme conditions that drive the sample far from equilibrium and rapidly convert it into high temperature plasma. READ MORE

12. Investigation of Neuronal Protein Trafficking at the Molecular Scale
Abstract : Neurons are polarized cells that encode information in the nervous system viaelectrochemical connections named synapses. The tuning of synapticconnections is enabled by a plastic protein trafficking system which operates atthe nanoscale to finely tweak the neuronal ultrastructure. READ MORE

13. The Biophysics of Na+,K+-ATPase in neuronal health and disease
Abstract : Na+,K+-ATPase is one of the most important proteins in the mammalian cell. It creates sodium and potassium gradients which are fundamental for the membrane potential and sodium-dependent secondary active transport. READ MORE

14. The Application of isotropic bicelles as model membranes
Abstract : Isotropic bicelles are disc-shaped aggregates of lipids and detergents, and are suitable model systems for high-resolution NMR studies of membrane-interacting peptides. In this thesis the structures for the two peptides motilin and transportan were determined by homonuclear 1H methods in the presence of bicelles, and the structure of the bovine prion protein peptide (bPrPp) was solved in the presence of DHPC micelles. 15. Cell-penetrating peptides in model membrane systems : Interaction, structure induction and membrane effects
Abstract : Despite continuing advances in the development of macromolecules, including peptides, proteins, and oligonucleotides, for therapeutic purposes, the successful application of these hydrophilic molecules has so far been hampered by their inability to efficiently traverse the plasma membrane. The discovery of a class of peptides (cell-penetrating peptides, CPPs) with the ability to mediate the non-invasive and efficient import of a whole host of cargoes, both in vitro and in vivo, has provided a new means by which the problem associated with cellular delivery can be circumvented.
