  1. 1. Moringa seed and pumice as alternative natural materials for drinking water treatment

    Author : Kebreab Afwerki Ghebremichael; Bengt Hultman; Hallvard Ödegaard; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; antimicrobial effects; coagulant protein; dual media filtration; ion exchange; Moringa oleifera; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Pumice and the Moringa oleifera (MO) seed were investigated as alternative natural materials for drinking water treatment based on problems identified at the Stretta Vaudetto water treatment plant in Eritrea. Lab and pilot scale studies showed that pumice was a suitable alternative material for dual media filtration. READ MORE

  2. 2. Application of indigenous materials in drinking water treatment

    Author : Herbert Mpagi Kalibbala; Bengt Hultman; Joaquin Martinez; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coagulant aid; drinking water treatment; dual media filtration; Moringa oleifera; primary coagulant; trihalomethanes; volcanic ash; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : Volcanic ash and Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) were investigated as indigenous materials for drinking water treatment based on problems identified at Kampala and Masaka water treatment plants in Uganda. READ MORE

  3. 3. Moringa oleifera as an alternative fodder for dairy cows in Nicaragua

    Author : Bryan Mendieta-Araica; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The four studies comprising this thesis characterised Moringa oleifera as a fodder for dairy cows under dry tropical conditions in Nicaragua. An agronomy study examined, two planting densities (D1=100,000 and D2=167,000 plants ha-1) and four fertilisation levels (N1=0, N2=261, N3=521 and N4=782 kg N ha-1). READ MORE

  4. 4. Structure formation at solid/liquid interfaces : Understanding self-assembly and environmental challenges

    Author : Shirin Nouhi; Adrian R. Rennie; Vassilios Kapaklis; Maja S. Hellsing; Ann Terry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid liquid interface; neutron scattering; colloidal particles; self-assembly; perfluoroalkyl substance; Moringa seed proteins; adsorption; lamellar disorder; thermal fluctuations.;

    Abstract : The work described in the present dissertation has explored the structure of particles and molecules at solid/liquid interfaces, aiming to understand the physics of self-organizing systems and use this knowledge to address some environmental issues. Surface-sensitive neutron scattering techniques, such as reflectometry and grazing incidence small angle scattering, have been used as the primary tool to investigate structures in proximity to an interface. 5. 5. Coagulant Protein from plant materials: Potential Water Treatment Agent

    Author : Ida Bodlund; Gunaratna Kuttuva Rajarao; Anna Norström; Andres Veide; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; antimicrobial effect; Brassica; coagulant protein; MO2.1; Moringa oleifera; Mustard; napin; thermo-resistance; plant material; protein extraction; salt extract.;

    Abstract : Access to fresh water is a human right, yet more than 780 million people, especially in rural areas, rely on unimproved sources and the need for finding ways of treating water is crucial. Although the use of natural coagulant protein in drinking water treatment has been discussed for a long time, the method is still not in practice, probably due to availability of material and limited knowledge.
