  1. 11. Hippocampal galanin and acetylcholine in spatial learning

    Author : Pär A Schött; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : hippocampus; galanin; acetylcholine; memory and learning; swim maze; microinjections; HPLC;

    Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to study how the neuropeptide galanin affects the neurochemistry and functional activity of the cholinergic septohippocampal projection, which plays a pivotal role in learning and memory. This cholinergic system is strongly impaired in Alzheimer's disease and in age-related dementias. READ MORE

  2. 12. Neurochemical regulators of the septohippocampal pathway : role in spatial and aversive learning

    Author : Elin Elvander Tottie; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acetylcholine; muscarinic receptor; galanin; serotonin; 5-HT1A receptor; glutamate; NMDA receptor; water maze; passive avoidance; septum; hippocampus; learning; memory; spatial; aversive; emotional; cognition;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the significance of major neurotransmitters in the septohippocampal pathway for hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. The cholinergic and GABAergic neurons in the medial septal/vertical limb of the diagonal band of Broca area (MS/vDB) projecting to the hippocampus, constitute the septohippocampal pathway, which has been implicated in a number of important functions such as attention, anxietylike behavior and hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. 3. 13. Central neuropeptide Y (NPH) expression and function : role in stress, experimental anxiety, and cognition

    Author : Annika Thorsell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : neuropeptide Y; stress; experimental anxiety; cognition; lipid-mediated gene transfer; transgenic animals; rat;

    Abstract : Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a 36 amino acid peptide abundantly expressed throughout the mammalian nervous system, has been implicated in experimental anxiety and stress related responses, feeding, and learning and memory. These functions are mediated via different receptor subtype populations (Y1-Y6), all belonging to the G-protein coupled receptor superfamily. READ MORE

  4. 14. On nogo receptors, plasticity and lasting memories

    Author : Tobias Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The central nervous system has very limited ability to repair itself after injury but has been shown to exhibit remarkable experience-driven structural plasticity at the synaptic level. These changes correlate strongly with behavioral performance and are thought to underlie learning and memory. READ MORE

  5. 15. NMDA receptors in neurodegeneration : studies on NMDA receptor subunit expression preceding ischemia-induced delayed nerve cell death

    Author : Olof Bendel; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : NMDA receptors are glutamate-gated ion channels that are permeable to Ca2+. NMDA receptors are tetramers formed by a combination of subunits. In the present thesis, we describe the novel NR3B subunit that we cloned in mouse and human. NR3B was found to be expressed in the adult rat and human central nervous system (CNS). READ MORE
