  1. 21. Participatory forest management for sustainable livelihoods in the Bale Mountains, Southern Ethiopia

    Author : Yemiru Tesfaye; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Preventing environmental degradation and alleviating poverty are the twin challenges of sustainable development. Participatory forest management (PFM) takes the challenge of preventing the degradation of forest resources while sustaining forest-based benefits to people's livelihoods. READ MORE

  2. 22. Biodiversity patterns and the processes regulating them along elevation gradients in the Swedish mountains

    Author : Johannes Måsviken; Love Dalén; Anne Bjorkman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; elevation gradients; spiders; insects; plants; latitude; altitude; alpha diversity; beta diversity; taxonomic diversity; phylogenetic diversity; functional diversity; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Abstract : Biodiversity describes the total variation of life and includes the taxonomic, genetic, and phenotypic differences among organisms. Variations of biodiversity in space and time may be driven by ecological, evolutionary, or neutral processes. READ MORE

  3. 23. “No Friends but the Mountains” Understanding Population Mobility and Land Dynamics in Iraqi Kurdistan

    Author : Lina Eklund; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; migration; drought; Iraqi Kurdistan; agriculture; land; scale;

    Abstract : The link between population mobility and environmental change is fundamental for our understanding of how future global environmental changes will affect our societies, and also how the increased mobility will change our role in the Earth system. Climate change has been predicted as a major cause of human migration, both voluntary and forced, through for example increased storm and drought frequency, sea level rise, and reduced fresh water availability. 4. 24. Tree-limit ecotonal response to Holocene climate change in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden

    Author : Jonas Bergman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tree-limit ecotone; alpine vegetation; tephrochronology; peat humification; plant macrofossils; Palaeobotany; fylogeni; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; palynologi; Geologi; Geology; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology; Fysisk geografi; cartography; Holocene climate; palaeoecology; marklära; kartografi; pollen influx;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetational and climatic development in the Sylarna-Storulvån area, western Jämtland, in the central Scandes Mountains. Temporal trends and fluctuations in the elevation and vegetational character of the tree-limit ecotone were studied mainly by means of pollen and plant macrofossil analysis of two lake sediment sequences (Lakes Stentjärn and Spåime), located above the present-day tree-limit. 5. 25. Spatial and Temporal Variations of Solifluction and Related Environmental Parameters in the Abisko Mountains, Northern Sweden

    Author : Hanna Ridefelt; Jan Boelhouwers; Antoni Lewkowicz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; solifluction; movement rates; Abisko region; Geographical Information Systems; statistical modelling; geomorphic work; permafrost; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : This thesis presents an assessment of the variation in solifluction occurrence, morphometry and movement rates in the Abisko region, northern Sweden. Variations in movement rates are analyzed both on a regional and local scale. READ MORE
