1. New Dimensions of Moving Bed Biofilm Carriers : Influence of biofilm thickness and control possibilities
Abstract : The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is a biological wastewater treatment process in which microorganisms grow as biofilms on suspended carriers. Conventionally, MBBRs are mainly designed and optimized based on the carrier surface area, neglecting the dynamic relationship between carrier design, reactor operation and biofilm characteristics, such as biofilm thickness and the composition of the microbial community. 2. The deammonification in Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors
Abstract : Deammonification process appears to be a good alternative to treat reject water. In this thesis, control strategies were studied at pilot scale in order to optimise the deammonification process operated in a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) for reject water treatment. READ MORE

3. Perspectives on Biofilms for the Removal of Organic Micropollutants in Wastewater
Abstract : The use of biofilms to improve the removal of organic micropollutants in waste¬water treatment plants (WWTPs) has been investigated. The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, the use of biofilms for the biological degradation of micro¬pollutants was investigated. READ MORE

4. Controlling and monitoring of deammonification process in moving bed biofilm reactor
Abstract : It is considered that partial nitrification combined with anammox, named deammonification, is more environmental friendly compared with conventional nitrification/denitrification due to decrease energy requirement, low emission of CO2 and N2O. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a significant parameter influencing the nitrogen removal rate and activity of different microorganisms. READ MORE
