  1. 1. A Theoretical Perspective on the Chemical Bonding and Structure of Transition Metal Carbides and Multilayers

    Author : Mikael Råsander; Olle Eriksson; Biplab Sanyal; Risto Nieminen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Electronic structure; transition metal carbides; density functional theory; disorder; multilayers; chemical bonding; materials science; Condensed matter physics; Kondenserade materiens fysik; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : The present thesis deals with a theoretical description of issues regarding chemical bonding, structure and stability of transition metal carbides and multilayered structures. First principles density functional theory has been used extensively to investigate the properties of alloyed solutions of transition metal carbides. READ MORE

  2. 2. Magnetism of Semiconductors and Metallic Multilayers

    Author : Victor Stanciu; Per Nordblad; Peter Svedlindh; Poul Erik Lindelof; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; Magnetic order; Curie temperature; magnetic anisotropy; diluted magnetic III-V semiconductors; metallic magnetic multilayers; interlayer exchange coupling; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors and magnetic metallic multilayers are investigated by SQUID magnetometry. By doping GaAs with magnetic Mn2+ ions under well defined growth conditions, one obtains a diluted magnetic semiconductor, (Ga,Mn)As, in which the randomly-distributed magnetic ions act as acceptor centers. 3. 3. Uncovering Magnetic Order in Nanostructured Disordered Materials : A Study of Amorphous Magnetic Layered Structures

    Author : Panagiotis Korelis; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Gabriella Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Amorphous Materials; Magnetism; Amorphous Magnetism; Magnetic Measurements; Thin Films; Multilayers; Thin Film Deposition; Sputtering; FeZr Alloys; AlZr Alloys; X-ray Diffraction; Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : The scope of this thesis is the study of the interplay between structure and magnetism in amorphous materials. The investigations focus on the growth of amorphous layers and the study of the influence of structural disorder and reduced physical extension on the magnetic properties of thin films and multilayers. 4. 4. Magnetic Heterostructures : The Effect of Compositional Modulation on Magnetic Properties

    Author : Inna Soroka; Roger Wäppling; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Rudolf Schäfer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; Magnetism; Sputter deposition; Superlattice; Multilayers; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : The effect of compositional modulation on structural and magnetic properties of magnetic heterostructures was explored. The systems under focus were ferromagnetic superlattices Fe81Ni19/Co, metal-insulator multilayers Al2O3/Ni81Fe19, nanoparticles and artificial multilayered pillars. READ MORE

  5. 5. Tailoring Properties of Materials at the Nanoscale

    Author : Hossein Raanaei; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Igor A. Abrikosov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Multilayers; magnetic anysotropy; amorphous materials; Magnetism; Magnetism; Materiefysik; Physics of Matter;

    Abstract : The knowledge of growth and characterizing techniques is essential for the preparation of high quality thin films and multilayers. Here, structural properties have been investigated by X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy while the composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry.
