  1. 1. The economics of residual waste : policies, price discrimination, and welfare

    Author : Sef Meens-Eriksson; David Granlund; Runar Brännlund; Thomas Broberg; Raymond Gradus; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Waste economics; net social cost analysis; waste incineration; municipal waste policy; waste taxes; price discrimination; spatial competition; welfare effects; Economics; nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : Paper [I]: In this study, a net social cost framework is applied to provide insights on policy issues relating to the cross-border trade in waste fuel. We estimate the net social cost of using imported waste fuel in a highly efficient combined heat and power plant (CHP) in a cold climate by considering both private costs and benefits as well as external costs related to energy production, alternative waste management and fuel transport. 2. 2. Waste-integrated biorefineries : A path towards efficient utilization of waste

    Author : Chaudhary Awais Salman; Jinyue Yan; Eva Thorin; Mika Järvinen; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Gasification; Pyrolysis; Anaerobic digestion; Process integration; Aspen Plus; Ebsilon; Techno-economic analysis; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Waste-management systems have progressed from landfilling and dumping to waste prevention, recycling and resource recovery. In state-of-the-art waste-management industries, waste is separated into various fractions and treated with suitable processes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Systems Aspects of Increased Swedish Waste Incineration

    Author : Jenny Sahlin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biological treatment; incineration tax; waste management; waste import; value of households’ time.; waste incineration; district heating; MSW; landfilling ban; recycling;

    Abstract : Abstract Recent bans on landfilling of combustible and organic waste in Sweden have resulted in an increase in alternative waste treatment, especially waste incineration with energy recovery. This thesis elucidates how the current increase in Swedish waste incineration affects and is affected by the two systems to which it belongs: the waste management and the energy systems. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biogas from slaughterhouse waste : Mixtures interactions in co-digestion

    Author : Jhosané Pagés Diaz; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Slaughterhouse waste; Agro-Waste; Co-digestion; Synergistic effects; Methanogenic community structure; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : Global environmental concerns connected to the use of fossil fuels have forced the development ofalternative sustainable energy technologies. The application of anaerobic digestion, from waste streams thatcurrently have no use, can be utilized for bioenergy production. READ MORE

  5. 5. Recovery of organic carbon from municipal waste streams

    Author : Isaac Owusu-Agyeman; Elzbieta Plaza; Zeynep Cetecioglu; Irini Angelidaki; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biogas; Volatile fatty acid; Anaerobic granules; Co-digestion; Municipal waste; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The focus of the current study was on the recovery of carbon from municipal bio-waste streams. Firstly, the relationship between methanogenic pathways and the properties of anaerobic granules was studied using two pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors with different granule size distribution.
