  1. 16. Smooth muscle hypertrophy and the IGF-system

    Author : Yun Chen; David R. Clemmons; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Insulin-like growth factor-! (IGF-I) has both metabolic and mitogenic effects on smooth muscle cells (SMCs). The effects of IGF-I are modified by a group of binding proteins (IGFBPs). The present study was devoted to smooth muscle hypertrophy and the IGF-system in smooth muscle under different conditions. READ MORE

  2. 17. Strenght training and anabolic steroids : a comparative study of the trapezius, a shoulder muscle and the vastus lateralis, a thigh muscle, of strength trained athletes

    Author : Anders Eriksson; Bengt Saltin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : strength training; anabolic steroids; vastus lateralis; trapezius; enzymehistochemistry; immunohistochemistry; muscle fiber; myonuclei; satellite cell; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Strength training is widely used to increase performance in sports with high physical demands. The use of drugs such as anabolic steroids among athletes is a wellknown phenomenon, and the effects of these drugs on physical performance documented. READ MORE

  3. 18. Evaluation of surgical methods for sleep apnea and snoring

    Author : Thorbjörn Holmlund; Diana Berggren; Eva Levring Jäghagen; Karl Franklin; Sören Berg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sleep apnea syndromes; adverse effects; mortality; radiofrequency; sham surgery; randomized controlled trial; daytime sleepiness; snoring; tonsillar hypertrophy; tonsillectomy; cytoskeleton; desmin; dystrophin; muscle fiber; palatopharyngeus; soft palate; uvula.; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Abstract : Background: Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are both common disorders with a number of negative health effects. The safety and efficacy of treating snoring and OSA surgically have been questioned and there has been a lack of studies in the field. READ MORE

  4. 19. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome

    Author : Johan Sundström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Left ventricular hypertrophy; insulin; glucose; lipids; mortality; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Abstract : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70. 5. 20. Mechanisms of stretch-induced growth and contractile differentiation in vascular smooth muscle

    Author : Asad Zeidan; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysiologi; Physiology; SM22a; ERK1 2; caveolae; stretch; Smooth muscle; differentiation;

    Abstract : Vascular smooth muscle can adapt to increased intraluminal pressure by remodelling and hypertrophy, as seen in hypertension. The molecular mechanisms responsible for this are still incompletely characterized. READ MORE
