6. Brain processing of experimental muscle pain and its interrelation with proprioception and muscle fatigue : positron emission tomography study
Abstract : Chronic muscle pain is a significant medical and social problem and better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved is an important requirement for further development of diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation methods. Experimental imaging studies have investigated functional neuroanatomy of different pain components. READ MORE

7. Integration of signalling in smooth muscle caveolae
Abstract : Caveolae and lipid rafts are plasma membrane microdomains that are considered to play a role in cellular signalling. Caveolins and cavins as well as cholesterol are required for the structure and function of caveolae. The papers summarized in this thesis examine the role of caveolae in smooth muscle function. 8. Repetitive and monotonous work among women : Psychophysiological and subjective stress reactions, muscle activity and neck and shoulder pain
Abstract : Repetitive and monotonous work is frequently associated with neck and shoulder pain and negative psychosocial factors inducing stress reactions. The present thesis concerns the relations between psychophysiological and subjective stress reactions, muscle activity measured by surface electromyography (SEMG) in the trapezius muscle, and neck and shoulder pain in women performing repetitive and monotonous work. 9. Ultrasonic Quantification of Skeletal Muscle Dynamics : Feasibility and Limitations
Abstract : Pain and disorders of the human skeletal muscles are one of the most common reasons for medical consultations in the western countries today and there is a great need to improve both the understanding and treatment of several different muscular conditions.Techniques describing the muscle function in vivo are often limited by either their invasiveness or lack of spatial resolution. 10. Effects of PGC1a-induced exercise adaptations in muscle on plasticity and recovery mechanisms in the CNS
Abstract : In this thesis, we sought to determine if muscle-derived exercise-induced signaling via PGC-1α muscle activation influences neuroplasticity under physiological or pathophysiological conditions. For this purpose, transgenic mice with muscle-specific overexpression of PGC-1α that display an endurance exercise muscle phenotype were evaluated in models of cranial irradiation and photothrombotic stroke, as well as in aging and in a voluntary running paradigm.
