18. His Name Immortal : Five Studies in the Sacred Music of Johann Baptist Wanhal
Abstract : This thesis comprises five studies of the sacred music of Johann Baptist Wanhal (1739–1813), and his masses in particular. A review of the historical records reveals that his sacred music was highly regarded by those who knew it – without the caveats that were sometimes attached to his secular music – and that a number of details in his biography need to be revised, the most important of which concern the likely date of his move to Vienna and the consequences this has on the chronology of his early compositions. Abstract : This dissertation examines the coming of sound film in Sweden during the years 1928–1932, and the reception of mechanically recorded sounds both in the trade press and among audiences. The novelty of sound film opened up for a negotiation of the perception of sound and image, as it made visible the film medium’s technological construction, before this visibility was once more absorbed by the cinematic discourse. Abstract : This study investigates early employments of family trees in the modern sciences, in order to historicise their iconic status and now established uses, notably in evolutionary biology and linguistics. Moving beyond disciplinary accounts to consider the wider cultural background, it examines how early uses within the sciences transformed family trees as a format of visual representation, as well as the meanings invested in them.
