16. Helicobacter pylori and gastric carcinogenesis : An experimental study of some preneoplastic events
Abstract : Half the population in the world is chronically infected with H.pylori. This infection has been proven to be associated with gastritis, duodenal and gastric ulcers but also with gastric cancer and MALT-lymphoma. The aims of this thesis were to explore some possible mechanisms by which H. READ MORE

17. Role of oxidative stress response in radiosensitivity
Abstract : The quality of the ionizing radiation (IR) can be described in terms of its nature, photons or particles, and their corresponding energies. The energy is classified in terms of High or Low linear energy transfer that will produce a different distribution of DNA damage and other molecules in the cell either by direct action or indirect action. 18. Studies on DNA adducts and carcinogenesis with 2-nitrofluorene as a model substance
Abstract : A number of carcinogens or their electrophilic intermediates are able to bind covalently to DNA, forming DNA adducts. DNA adducts may cause gene mutations if they are misrepaired or remain unrepaired before DNA replication occurs. DNA adduct formation is believed to be the initial step of chemical carcinogenesis. 19. HPRT mutational spectra and microsatellite DNA instability in HNPCC and lung cancer patients
Abstract : The, general aims of this work have been to explore the use of microsatellite DNA length variation and mutational spectra of the hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) locus in T-cells as tools for a better understanding of human somatic mutagenesis in vivo. In particular (a) how inherited mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency may affect the stability of microsatellite DNA and the mutational spectrum at the HPRT locus, and (b) how the mutational spectrum at the HPRT locus is influenced by smoking, and by predisposition to lung cancer among never smokers.
