  1. 6. Autonomic nervous system regulation in chronic neck-shoulder pain : Relations to physical activity and perceived stress

    Author : David Hallman; Eugene Lyskov; Bengt Arnetz; Ewa Wigaeus Tornqvist; Allan Toomingas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Autonomic imbalance; Daily physical activity; Trapezius myalgia; Treatment; Parasympathetic; Sympathetic;

    Abstract : Neck-shoulder pain (NSP) is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorder with unclear causes, and effective prevention and treatment require a further understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Aberrant autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation is a hypothesized causal element in the development and maintenance of chronic muscle pain. READ MORE

  2. 7. Masseter muscle pain and its relation to pain mediators in fibromyalgia and local myalgia

    Author : Britt Hedenberg-Magnusson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Fibromyalgia; glucocorticoid; intramuscular temperature; isometric contraction; leukotriene B4; masseter muscle; microdialysis; myalgia; neuropeptide Y; pressure pain threshold; pressure pain tolerance level; prostaglandin E2; trapezius muscle; temporomandibular disorders; questionnaire; visual analogue pain scale.;

    Abstract : The aim of this investigation was to study chronic jaw muscle pain in fibromyalgia, local myalgia and healthy individuals in relation to the pain mediators PGE2, LTB4 and NPY and to study the effects of glucocorticoid administration and repetitive isometric contraction. A questionnaire showed presence of symptoms from the temporomandibular region in almost all fibromyalgia patients and the local pain was correlated to the general pain but on a lower level. 3. 8. Pain influences somatosensory perception : an experimental and clinical study

    Author : Ann-Sofie Leffler; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Muscle pain; referred pain; hypoaesthesia; allodynia; musculoskeletal; pain; sensory abnormality; quantitative sensory testing; trapezius myalgia; somatosensory perception; perception thresholds; diffuse noxious inhibitory controls DNIC ; central hyperexcitability; tourniquet test; cold-pressor test.;

    Abstract : The underlying mechanisms maintaining long-term pain localised to musculoskeletal structures and joints are not infrequently unknown. In routine clinical work with such patients insufficient attention has been paid to phenomena indicating altered excitability of the central nervous system (CNS). READ MORE

  4. 9. Salivary biomarkers in chronic muscle pain

    Author : Hajer Jasim; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Muscle related temporomandibular disorders (TMD myalgia), one of the most common orofacial pain conditions, is characterized by facial pain and often accompanied by jaw movement limitations. Although the underlying biological mechanisms are still unclear, a cluster of proteins and peptides is assumed may mirror the pathophysiology. READ MORE

  5. 10. I feel terrible! Can you measure that? : Exploring psychophysiological stress responses and their interactions with performance, subjective reports and health status

    Author : Anna Sjörs; Torbjörn Falkmer; Björn Gerdle; Britt Larsson; Ulf Lundberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : psychophysiology; motion sickness; chronic pain; stressor; performance; autonomic responses; HPA axis; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Despite recent research advances, there are still several common medical conditions whose underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In conditions with few or diffuse physical findings, it can be difficult to diagnose and determine the state of the condition and its effects on working ability or performance, and the health care practitioners have to rely on the patient’s self-reports.
