1. Smokeless Tobacco (Snus) and Cardiovascular Disease : Associations with Heart Failure and Prognosis after Myocardial Infarction
Abstract : Previous investigations of snus use (oral moist snuff, a Swedish form of smokeless tobacco) and cardiovascular disease have generally focused on atherosclerotic events such as myocardial infarction and stroke, likely because smoking is such a well-established risk factor for atherosclerotic disease. Smokeless administration of tobacco circumvents most of the atherogenic effects of the combusted products from smoked tobacco, but it is possible that the potent autonomic and hemodynamic effects of snus and nicotine per se are detrimental for cardiovascular tissues. 2. Women, smoking and myocardial infarction
Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to explore factors associated with smoking and smoking cessation in women and the relation between smoking and incidence of myocardial infarction (MI). The time trends in incidence of MI 1986-2002 in the city of Malmö (pop. 250.000) were explored. READ MORE

3. Physical activity, visceral adipose tissue, and cardiovascular disease in older adults : associations and effects
Abstract : BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a substantial public health burden and is the leading cause of mortality in older adults. With the population aging rapidly, interventions aimed at improving modifiable risk factors for CVD, such as physical inactivity and visceral obesity, could play an important role in reducing its burden, provided they are proven effective. 4. Beyond the established risk factors of myocardial infarction : lifestyle factors and novel biomarkers
Abstract : Age, male sex, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and obesity are considered as established risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Several of these established cardiovascular risk factors are strongly influenced by lifestyle. READ MORE

5. Myocardial Scars on MRI : Their Prevalence and Possible Impact
Abstract : Myocardial infarction (MI) causes high morbidity and mortality worldwide and for effective prevention and treatment MIs have to be adequately detected. The existence of clinically unrecognized MIs (UMIs) has been known for the past hundred years, but an ultimate tool for their detection has not yet been found.
