  1. 1. The involvement of the TNF-alpha system in skeletal muscle in response to marked overuse

    Author : Lina Renström; Sture Forsgren; Per Stål; Håkan Alfredson; Eva Ekblad; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TNF-alpha; TNFR1; TNFR2; muscle damage; myositis; peritendinous tissue; tendinopathy;

    Abstract : Painful conditions having the origin within the musculoskeletal system is a common cause for people to seek medical care. Between 20-40% of all visits to the primal care in Sweden are coupled to pain from the musculoskeletal system. Muscle pain and impaired muscle function can be caused by muscles being repetitively overused and/or via heavy load. READ MORE

  2. 2. lnclusion body myositis - Genetic, clinical, and epidemiological aspects

    Author : Ulrika Lindgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inclusion body myositis; mitochondrial DNA; epidemiology; cytochrome c oxidase; inflammatory myopathy;

    Abstract : The inflammatory myopathy inclusion body myositis (IBM) is characterized by progressive muscle weakness and dysphagia in individuals over 45 years of age. Muscle biopsy shows inflammatory infiltrates, vacuoles with protein accumulation and cytochrome c oxidase (COX)-deficient muscle fibers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies in sporadic inclusion body myositis

    Author : Snjólaug Arnardóttir; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : s-IBM; muscle fibre regeneration; cytoskeleton; IVIg; muscle inflammtion; cytokine; training; sensibility; neuropathy ;

    Abstract : Aims: The general aims of the present study were to increase the understanding of the disease process in s-lBM by analysing the cytoskeletal structure in muscle fibres and their regeneration potential; and also to evaluate sensory function in patients with s-IBM to test the hypothesis of an associated neurogenic component or a concomitant neuropathy in s-IBM; and to evaluate therapeutic options by analysing the effect of IVIg treatment on the muscle inflammation; and to evaluate the effect of training on muscle function and muscle inflammation. Patients: Twenty-six patients with the diagnosis of s41BM participated in these studies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Epidemiologic studies on rheumatic muscle inflammation, myositis

    Author : John Svensson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Observational study designs are often used in medical research. Swedish national registers have successfully been used as data sources for such observational studies in other rheumatic diseases. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immune mechanisms in chronic rheumatic muscle inflammation, myositis

    Author : Quan Tang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), shortly named myositis, is a group of heterogeneous and rare autoimmune diseases with the target tissue of skeletal muscle. It is not curable and affects the daily life of patients. The treatment of myositis is mainly glucocorticoids in combination with immunosuppressive agents. READ MORE
