  1. 1. Hydrophobic Interactions in Bioseparation - Applications of Modified Green Fluorescent Protein

    Author : Kristian Becker; [2008]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrophobic interaction chromatography; capillary electrochromatography; E. coli; isolation tags; haemoglobin; green fluorescent protein; retention prediction; genetic engineering; accessible surface area;

    Abstract : This thesis describes interactions that are salt-promoted and mainly based on the hydrophobicity of proteins. A series of variants of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) was first constructed by site-directed mutagenesis. Several tags with various properties were then genetically fused to the N-terminus of GFP. READ MORE

  2. 2. Molecular Recognition Mechanisms: Thermodynamics and Polarization Spectroscopy of DNA--Intercalator Complexes

    Author : Hans-Christian Becker; [2000]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; groove-binding; DNA; intercalation; linear dichroism; polarization spectroscopy; thermodynamics; enthalpy--entropy compensation;

    Abstract : Mechanisms for molecular recognition in DNA--intercalator complexes have been investigated by optical spectroscopy. The effect of electrical charge on binding geometry and binding thermodynamics was studied using 2,7-diazapyrene (DAP) and its N-methylated cations DAP+ and DAP2+ as model ligands. READ MORE

  3. 3. To Choose or not to Choose Functional Foods, that is the Question Swedish Consumers’ and Health-care Professionals’ Attitudes to and Use of Functional Foods

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to investigate attitudes to functional foods (here defined as foods with health claims) among Swedish consumers and health-care professionals. The aim is also to survey demographics and health interests associated with the consumption of functional foods among Swedish consumers. READ MORE

  4. 4. Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Quality of Life and Nasal Form and Function among Adults

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Maria Mani; Mats Holmström; Valdemar Skoog; Anna Andlin-Sobocki; Magnus Becker; [2010]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; unilateral cleft lip and palate; quality of life; SF-36; nasal function; nasal breathing; nasolabial appearance; cleft width; long-term results; MEDICINE Surgery Surgical research Plastic surgery; MEDICIN Kirurgi Kirurgisk forskning Plastikkirurgi; Plastikkirurgi; Plastic Surgery;

    Abstract : Unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is a craniofacial malformation with functional and aesthetical impact on the face and the upper airways. The aims of the current thesis were to evaluate Quality of life (QoL) in adults treated for UCLP  (I), to objectively evaluate nasal form and function and to search for possible differences in residual nasal deformity and impairment of function between patients operated according to one-stage and two-stage palate closure (II) as well as to evaluate the relationship between professional and lay rating and patient satisfaction with nasolabial appearance (III) and to identify factors associated with lower levels of QoL and less satisfaction with nasal appearance among adults treated for UCLP (IV).
